    [02] 29th anniversary of Democracy in Greece

    Today is the 29th anniversary of the restoration of Democracy to Greece that will be celebrated with the traditional reception held by the President of the Republic in the gardens of the Presidential Mansion. The importance of a steady democratic life following the fall of the military junta, 29 years ago, was pointed out in the messages sent by Prime Minister Simitis and other political leaders.

    In their messages, the country's state and political leadership underlined democracy in Greece is now stronger than ever.

    [03] New Greek-Turkish Confidence Building Measures

    Foreign and defence policies and the new Confidence Building Measures between Greece and Turkey were discussed this morning during a meeting that was presided by the Prime Minister between Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou and the Minister of the National Defence Giannos Papantoniou

    Last night, Mr. Papandreou and his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul had telephone communication shortly after NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson announcement stating that an agreement has been reached on two new construction measures between Greece and Turkey, as a result of discussions held in the framework of NATO.

    [04] Government's plans for Thessaloniki in view of Trade Fair

    The acceleration of all the government's initiatives with respect to public works, education, health and transportation in Thessaloniki was decided upon during a extended governmental meeting today in view of the Prime Minister's visit to the northern Greece capital in September for the annual International Trade Fair.

    [05] New Democracy refuses electoral law dialogue

    The meeting between Minister of the Interior Costas Scandalidis and the ND Sector Head Vyron Polydoras, on the government's proposal concerning the electoral law was of a formal nature, as the ND party is refusing to discuss the issue. Mr. Polydoras pointed out his party would not participate in the dialogue for reasons of political morality nor would it be lured by the PM's and Pasok party's small party intentions.
