[02] E.U common agriculture policy reforms

The European Union thrashed out a hard-fought deal yesterday to radically reform its subsidy- rich agriculture policy , saying it would give stalled world trade talks a boost and help farmers in poor nations.

E.U governments hailed the deal, clinched after 16 hours of non-stop talks and which will lead to one of the most comprehensive shake-ups of the 45 year old common agricultural policy.

Greek Agriculture Minister, Giorgos Drys said that the EU farm package was a great success for Greek agriculture and a useful impetus to the WTO negotiations. The common agricultural policy provides for subsidies of Mediterranean products till 2013, increase of milk production to 120 tonnes annually and inclusion of the Aegean islands in the hyper regional programs. However, the new plan breaks the links between output and subsidies for farmers receiving over 5000 euros subsidies.

In the meantime, Environment Minister, Vaso Papandreou presented a new map of seismic activity in the country to be in effect as from 2004. It abolishes the zone of low seismic activity of the country and introduces new construction regulations.
