[02] EU Summit successful claim most EU leaders

Tens of thousands of people from Greece and abroad demonstrated in Thessaloniki yesterday against war, poverty, unemployment and policies adopted by European Union leaders.

Incidents were reported at the centre of Thessaloniki yesterday when groups of anarchists clashed and caused damages to shops, banks and police vehicles. At least 15 demonstrators were injured during the clashes.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Macedonia and Thrace George Pashalides said yesterday that the government would see that the damages are restored.

At the same time, Synaspismos party leader Nikos Konstantopoulos accused police leadership of not being able to protect t the grand demonstration of European citizens in Thessaloniki.

From their side, however, most European Union leaders appear satisfied from the results of the Summit Meeting in Chalkidiki.

In an interview with NET 105.8 yesterday, Foreign Minister George Papandreou stressed that the success of the Greek EU Presidency is due to the fact that it managed to create a strategic dogma that will be adopted at the end of the Italian EU Presidency and thus with the new European Constitution it will have for the first time an integrated framework of philosophy, principles and targets.

On the occasion of the approval of the draft of constitutional treaty at the EU Summit Meeting, the President of the Hellenic Republic Costis Stephanopoulos said that a 'big homeland had been born'.
