    An unsettled weather is forecast with storms and showers in Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly and the islands of the Aegean. Temperatures in Athens will range between 15 C to 22 C and in Thessaloniki between 13C and 19 C.

    [02] Prime-minister Simitis visits Slovenia today

    Prime-minister and EU Council President, Kostas Simitis will visit Slovenia today within the context of his tour to European capitals in view of the upcoming EU summit in Thessaloniki in June.

    Prime-minister Simitis met with his Irish counterpart in Doublin yesterday Speaking to reporters, Simitis said that lifting the U.N sanctions on Iraq was the first step towards its reconstruction, adding that the EU and the U.N would play an important role.

    [03] November 17 new suspect testifies today

    Kostas Avramidis will be brought before a public prosecutor to make his statement today. The 42 year old civil enginner was recently arrested on charges of participation in the November 17 terrorist group after his fingerprints matched those found on a book inside one of the group s two weapons dens raided by police last year. Avramidis denies any involvement in the terrorist organisation.

    In the meantime, another suspect Kostas Tsigaridas awaiting trial was released on bail yesterday for health reasons.

    [04] Government examining measures to assist laid off

    Talks between Labor Ministry officials and the Palco underwear company management and dismissed employees proved fruitless. The owners of the company will proceed with final closure of their plant in Greece, leaving workers out of a job, after payment of compulsory compensation. Labor undersecretary, Lefteris Tziolas said that the government was examining the hiring of those laid off by municipal companies and promised to cover social security contributions for those nearing pension age limit..

    In the meantime, an American company, First Boston Investments has taken over management of Beauty and Diet- a high profile Greek enterprise that has recently found itself in severe financial difficulties. According to the Labor Ministry, the new management has pledged to safeguard employees jobs and settle outstanding debts. In addition, reliable sources indicate that two other ailing firms &#8211;Yvonne Stores and the Antonopoulos Super Market chain are engaged in final negotiations with prospective buyers.

    Rejecting speculation about rising unemployment, Labor Minister Dimitris Reppas reiterated that the economy remained the country s strong card.

    Commenting on an article in the Avriani newspaper attacking the Finance Minister, Nikos Hristodoulakis, Press Minister, Hristos Protopappas stressed that the government fully backs his handlings of the economic policy, repeating that vested interests and political party expediencies are beyond the scandal mongering.
