    Warm, sunny weather is forecast in all parts of the country. Winds variable, light. The temperature in Athens will range from 13 to 27C and in Thessaloniki from 11 to 27C.

    [02] Strong earthquake hits Turkey

    An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit south-eastern Turkey at dawn, resulting in the death of 150 civilians and the injury of 400 more. Housing Minister Zeki Ergezen announced the numbers of the casualties at the private TV network NTV.

    According to the Bingol province governor, where the epicenter of the earthquake was located, many buildings collapsed. Thus, dozens of people remain trapped under the rubble, while electricity supply was cut and there is not access to many villages of the area.

    Meanwhile, 50 pupils out of 135 of a 4- storey boarding school were rescued a few hours ago.

    At the same time, seismologist Vasilis Papazachos and Geology Professor Efthimis Lekkas told NET that that the earthquake that hit Turkey would not affect Greece.

    [03] Rallies for May 1

    Rallies took place in Athens today in honor of 1st May. Unions held separate rallies in an antiwar climate, while others marched to the American Embassy. Public Transport employees also held work stoppages.

    [04] Measures in aid of Turkish Cypriots

    Despite Turkish Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash's reaction, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots will hold joint events in celebration of 1st May.

    Meanwhile, the government of the Cyprus Republic announced a series of measures yesterday to help the Turkish Cypriots. Among others, they will be allowed to move from occupied Cyprus to free Cyprus and be employed even in government services. Additionally, the transport goods will be allowed within Cyprus and the European Union.

    Additionally, the Turkish language will be taught at High Schools, while Turkish Cypriot pupils and students will be taught Greek for free. Turkish Cypriot athletes will also be allowed to participate in Cypriot teams and Turkish Cypriot patients will also be able to be treated at Greek Cypriot hospitals.

    On a relative development, the President of the Cyprus Republic Tasos Papadopoulos explained that those measures were not connected to the efforts for the resolution of the Cyprus issue, but only aimed at improving the general climate and contributing to the development of contacts and relations between the two communities.

    At the same time, after his meeting with the Turkish Ambassador to Athens, Foreign Minister George Papandreou stated that Europe does not tolerate walls that separate peoples and countries.

    [05] Government does not operate under blackmail says Simitis

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis is expected to intervene by tomorrow on the accusations launched by 'Avriani' newspaper owner George Kouris against government officials.

    According to information, Mr Simitis is expected to reiterate that he the government does not operate under blackmail and will not allow third parties to determine its political agenda and developments.
