[02] Third day of N17 trial

N17 member Dimitris Koufodinas, from his side lay down the following condition: he asked for the live coverage of the trial vial TV, otherwise nothing should be televised.

The court will decide upon the televised coverage of the trial today, as well as the objections regarding the in competency of the court to try this case.

It should be noted that none of the 19 accused accepted the charges read to them, while Dimitris Koufodinas and Sawas Xiros resumed the political responsibility for the activities of the N17 terrorist organisation.

From his side, alleged leading member of N17 Alexandros Giotopoulos maintained that he had been accused because the Americans wished so. N17 members Constantinos Telios, Vasilis Georgatos, Thomas Serifis and Patroklos Tseledis accepted partly the bill of indictment.

Meanwhile, the government and politicians reacted to American Ambassador Thomas Miller's statements, according to which only the operational body of the terrorist organisation N17 is being tried.

Through its representative, the government called on Mr Miller to wait for the outcome of the trial, while the State Department attribute Mr Miller's statements to his personal knowledge of what had happened during the investigation carried out by the Greek government.

[03] Denktash wants Cyprus divided

The United Nations Secretary General called on both sides not to reject his proposal and pointed out that the Security Council members are expecting a positive answer.

Today, the National Council will meet in Nicosia, while tomorrow the President of the Cyprus Republic Tasos Papadopoulos will visit Athens for discussions with Prime Minister Costas Simitis.

Besides, the Turkish Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash, who is visiting Ankara today, rejected the whole of Mr Annan's plan, maintaining that the only acceptable solution would be the division of the island.

At the same time, Turkish Cypriots will go on a strike today, demanding the acceptance of Mr Annan's proposal for a referendum on March 30.

Finally, commissioner Guinder Verhoygen stated that if the Cyprus issue were not resolved by May 1, then the beginning of accession negotiations with Turkey would become difficult.
