    [02] Tsigaridas confesses membership in the terrorist organization ELA

    64-year old civil engineer Christos Tsigaridas, who confessed that he was a member of the terrorist organization ELA, undertook the political responsibility for the organization until 1991 when he was its member. Mr Tsigaridas will testify tomorrow.

    Mr Tsigaridas was charged with participation in a terrorist organization, while his lawyer stated that his client did not intend to use the health problems he is facing as an excuse for a favourable treatment.

    Besides, Messrs Ageletos Kanas, Costas Agapiou and Irene Athanasaki, who denied their charges, will testify today.

    [03] ND party accuses the government of corruption

    During a debate on corruption in the public sector at Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Simitis accused the New Democracy party of populism and misleading statements about an extravagant and dismantled country. He also stated that some New Democracy MPs appeared to serving the interests of private interests, while he found similarities in the speeches of some of its cadres with those of ex dictator George Papadopoulos.

    From his side, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis spoke of the prime minister's delirium, describing his statements about right wing views, extremist and accusing the government of being dragged by corruption and big interests.

    Mr Karamanlis spoke of scandals in the stock market, the land registry, the investments of OTE in the Balkans and accused the government of using independent bodies that are responsible for the combating of economic crime (SDOE) as his party's bodies and finally presented a plan for the reestablishing of the state.

    From her side, the Secretary General of the Communist party of Greece Aleka Papariga said that scandals were the result of the laws of the capitalist market, maintaining that the government's positions did not differ substantially from those of the New Democracy party and called on the civilians to be on the alert.

    The Synaspismos party leader Nikos Contantopoulos stated that in view of the coming elections the two big parties are trying to cover the real problems Greece is facing.

    In reply, Mr Simitis stated that the political parties of the left agree with a right orientated restructuring of the state, forgetting of its negative past experience from such ventures.

    [04] Simitis &#8211; Angelopoulos &#8211; Daskalaki meeting to take place today

    Yesterday's meeting of Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis with &#8220;ATHENS 2004&#8221; Organizing Committee President Mrs. Yianna Angelopoulos-Daskalakis was postponed due to Mr. Simitis' preparation for yesterday evening's debate in Parliament on the issue of corruption.

    Meanwhile, press information mentions that Mrs. Angelopoulos &#8211; Daskalaki expressed discontent during Monday's ministerial committee meeting concerning the committee decision for cost and budget coordination in the Olympic Games preparations.

    The meeting of the Prime Minister with Mrs. Angelopoulos &#8211; Daskalaki will take place today.

    [05] Clerides &#8211; Denktash meeting on occupied territories

    Today's meeting between the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Clerides and the Turkish Cypriot representative Rauf Dentkash will focus on the issue of territories.

    Meanwhile, from his side Mr Denktash reiterated that he would not sign the Annan plan at its present state, adding that Morphou and Karpasia would not be returned to the Greek Cypriots. Additionally, he ruled out the return of the refugees to their homes occupied by Turkish Cypriot settlers.

    Referring to the recent demonstrations in the occupied territories, he said that the Turkish Cypriots' problems would be dealt with within the framework of the new support plan prepared in cooperation with the Turkish government.

    [06] Obesity worries Greeks

    In view of the fifth conference due to take place in Athens, representatives of the Hellenic Medical Association of Obesity have pointed out that the problem of obesity in Greece deserves concern, since it has been estimated that 70% of the Greeks by 2030 will be overweight.

    In an interview with NET, endocrinologist Ioannis Kaklamanos stated that besides aesthetic problems, obesity causes serious health problems.

    [07] Papandreou to attend UN Security Council meeting

    Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, current president of the EU council of ministers, in Beirut on Tuesday stressed the increasing importance of a European Union-Arab countries dialogue.

    Following his meeting with Lebanon's President Emile Lahoud and Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud, Papandreou pointed to the willingness of Lebanese and Arab leaders to cooperate with the EU on conveying a clear message to Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, and did not rule out the possibility of a joint EU-Arab initiative to dispatch to Baghdad a special delegation of Arabs and possibly also Europeans.

    Papandreou on Tuesday was flying from Beirut to New York where he will attend the UN Security Council meeting on Iraq, after which he will resume his Mideast tour.
