  • [01] Papandreou on a Middle East tour

    Foreign Minister George Papandreou, who is touring the Middle East to discuss the imminent war against Iraq, is today in Jordan. Mr Papandreou stated in Syria yesterday that war could be averted if Bagdad fully complied with the United Nations resolutions.

    From his side, his Syrian counterpart pointed out that military action was not justified according to the present results of the United Nations inspections, warning that a war against Iraq would mean more violence and terror.

    Meanwhile, 35 Eurodeputies, among which three Greeks are visiting Bagdad after having undertaken a peace initiative.

    At the same time, according to an American Pentagon official, the war against Iraq would begin soon, adding that the USA could have the situation under control in less than a month.

    From her side, National Security advisor Condoleza Rice stated that after the overthrow of the Iraqi President Saddam Housein, the target is the taking of power for some time.

    Finally, the Iraqi officials stated that they were willing to cooperate and negotiate during the visit of the United Nations head of inspectors Hans Blix and the Manager of the International Committee of Atomic Energy Mohamed El Baradei in Bagadad on February 8.

    [03] Terrorist organization ELA members to testify on Wednesday

    Terrorist organization ELA members Ageletos Kanas, Constantinos Agapiou and Irene Athanasiou, who are detained at the police headquarters, will defend themselves on Wednesday

    Although they have been charged for participating in the terrorist organization ELA, all three denied the charges.

    According to information that leaked, Mr Constantinos Agapiou, who carries the

    pseudonym Philip in the STAZI archives, became a leading member of ELA after the death of Christos Kasimis in 1977.

    [04] Clerides meets Denktash in face-to-face talks

    Within the framework of face-to-face talks, the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Clerides and the Turkish Cypriot representative will meet again in Nicosia today.

    Meanwhile, Mr Klerides stated that he did not expect that a solution of the Cyprus issue would take place by February 28, stressing however that the issue could be resolved within 2003.

    [05] Negotiations for the selling of Olympic Airways continue

    The termination date for the conclusion of negotiations for the selling of Olympic Airways to Resti Group remains open.

    In an interview with NET TV station, Transport Minister Christos Verelis stated that the privatizations council, who had undertaken to carry out the negotiations on behalf of the public sector, would brief the Ministries of National Economy and Transport on the course of the negotiations.
