[03] UN inspectors find empty rocked warheads

UN circles and the American administration appear to have degraded the discovery in Iraq of 11 empty rocked warheads designed to carry chemical warfare agents. A US official said the discovery did not amount to a smoking gun that could trigger war. Referring to the same issue, UN chief weapons inspector, Hans Blix said inspectors had not determined if they were destined for banned weapons programs .

Russia which holds a veto on the UN Security Council stepped up its diplomatic efforts to avoid war by sending Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov to Bagdad and announced that weapons inspectors should be allowed more to carry out their task.

Following his meeting with General Secretary of NATO , Lord Robertson, and EU Foreign policy chief Xavie Solana, Greek Prime-minister, Kostas Simitis said that all efforts should be made for a peaceful settlement of the Iraqi crisis, stressing the need for the implementation of UN resolutions and the allowance of the necessary time for UN inspectors to carry out their task.

Mr. Simitis also said that Greece has taken the initiative to bring on the issue of a common EU stand and strategy on the Iraqi crisis during the EU General Affairs Council on February 27th the same day UN inspectors will present their report to the UN Security Council.
