    Partly cloudy to cloudy skies are forecast for around the country on Monday, with rain showers possible in the west and across the mainland. Southwesterly winds, moderate to strong, gusty on the seas.

    Cloudy in Athens with temperatures ranging from 13C to 22C. Cloudy with a chance of afternoon rain in Thessaloniki, 9C to 17C.

    [02] Erdogan&#8217;s Islamist-based party wins elections in Turkey

    The leader of the Islamist-based Justice and Development Party (AK) Recep Tayyip Erdogan won the elections held in Turkey with more than 34% of the vote and is one of only two parties to cross the 10% threshold required to enter parliament. Deniz Baykal&#8217;s Republican People&#8217;s party also crossed the 10% threshold winning 19.5%.

    Tansut Ciller&#8217;s True Path party won 9.6%, while former Prime Minister Boulent Ecevit and Ismail Cem did not cross the 10% threshold.

    Meanwhile, within the coming days, Mr Recep&#8217;s party will announce the candidate Prime Minister, as Mr Erdogan cannot resume premiership because he had been deprived of the right to be elected following his conviction for stirring religious hatred.

    In tandem, Mr Erdogan promised to attract more investors in Turkey and a faster incorporation of the Turkish economy to the world economy, as well as the acceleration of Turkey&#8217;s accession process to the European Union.

    At the same time, the Vice President of the Justice and Development party Abdulai Gul stated this morning that he is against an American attack against Iraq, underlining that Turkey had sustained substantial economic damage reaching $40 billion during the Gulf war.

    In an interview with NET 105.8, the winner party&#8217;s official responsible for financial issues Burat Merzat stated that the new government would promote the necessary reforms so as to the achieve Turkey&#8217;s accession to the European Union.

    At the same time, in an interview with the same radio station, Foreign Ministry spokesman Panayiotis Beglitis stated that Greece is monitoring developments with realism, following the same rapprochement policy Greece had been adopting towards Turkey all those years.

    He also stated that the new Turkish government must continue introducing changes, without changing its course to the European Union, since Turkey&#8217;s accession is for the benefit of the Turkish people an d helps in smoothing out bilateral relations with Greece.

    [03] EU directive on work permanency to be implemented says Diamantopoulou

    In reply to a question asked by New Democracy party Eurodeputy Stavros Xarhakos, commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou stated that the public sector will not be excluded from the implementation of the Community&#8217;s directive according to which employers must offer work permanency to all those who are working in the public or private sector under limited time working agreements.

    Ms Diamantopoulou added that the Greek government had not announced yet to the European Union in what way it will implement the directive despite the fact that the implementation date of the directive is close.

    She also committed herself to evaluate the implementation of the directive in all EU member &#8211; states by the end of 2002 and take all necessary measures in case the implementation of the directive does not take place in the proper way.

    [04] PASOK&#8217;s Executive Bureau to meet today

    PASOK&#8217;s Executive Bureau will meet today to examine the current political developments, the Cyprus issue, the results of the Municipal and Prefectural elections, as well as the party cadres&#8217; proposal for the setting up of a centre-right pole.

    In reply, the Synaspismos party leader Nikos Konstantopoulos stated to today&#8217;s issue of the newspaper &#8220;Ta Nea&#8221; that his party would not cooperate with PASOK in the next Parliamentary elections.

    Finally, Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works Minister Vasso Papandreou stated that her party will continue implementing its strategy for programme rapprochement with other parties, without forcing these parties to agree if they do not wish to.

    [05] Big changes expected in EU agricultural policy says Diamantopoulou

    In an interview with the newspaper &#8220;To Ethnos&#8221; commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou stated that the European Agricultural Policy is in the crossroads of important changes. Specifically, it is proceeding to reform with drastic cuts and subsidies, adding at the same time that subsidized agriculture has no future what so ever. Regarding Greek agricultural products such as tobacco an and cotton, she said that they would face a big crisis in the future.

    Cuts will be implemented in subsidies for olive oil, cotton, tobacco, wheat and rice.

    The commissioner also referred to the employment programmes for the unemployed of the Manpower Organisation (OAED).
