[02] Negotiations for release of hostages continue

Urgent negotiations are going on to try to secure the release of 75 foreign nationals among the hostages held by a Chechen suicide squad in a Moscow theatre.

Diplomatic cars have begun arriving on the scene in anticipation of their release but earlier negotiations broke down and the deadline for them to be freed passed.

Seven people, all Russians, were let out early on Friday morning.

The rebels are threatening to blow themselves and the hostages up unless Russia withdraws its troops from Chechnya - they have killed one woman and wounded another as she escaped.

A Jordanian doctor who entered the theatre stated that there are many children among the hostages that need immediate medical help

Meanwhile, the President of the Russian Duma stated that the intruders are related to the Al Qaeda network

Finally, the international community denounced the Chechens’ act with a unanimous resolution of the United Nations Security Council that demands the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages.
