Mr. Simitis said we want Greece to be a safe country and, according to recent crime rates , Greece is the safest country in Europe at presentTo achieve this goal, Mr. Simitis announced new measures for the financial and moral support for those working in the security and emergency services. Meanwhile, Public Order Minister Mihalis Chrysohoidis will fly to Washington on a 3-day visit from October 21-23 to discuss developments on the dismantling of the November 17 urban guerilla group and further moves on the crack down of domestic terrorism . During his visit to Washington, Mr. Chrysohoidis will be contacting with the heads and senior officials of ministries competent on the combat of terrorism, as well as with officials of intelligence services with whom Greek police are cooperating for the combat of various forms of crime. (11/10/2002 12:20:00 μμ) [03] Polls for local government elections open in two daysTwo days prior to local government elections and strong worded political confrontation among the two major political parties continues.The N.D party and its candidate for Athens- Pireus hyper-prefecture , Yiannis Tzannetakos have launched a direct attack against Giorgos Karatzaferis , once deputy of the N.D party and now representing the extreme right wing . N.D party spokesman said that the N.D party does not bargain its principles and Karatzaferis has been definitely written off of the N.D party. Replying , the government spokesman said that the N.D party s statement confirmed the issue about the N.D party s cooperation with the extreme right wing raised by the Pasok party. Meanwhile, in an effort to resolve confusion about electoral districts due to the implementation of a new voting system ,Interior Minister, Kostas Skandalidis announced that letters were sent to 42 thousand voters informing them where they will cast their ballots while other 100 thousand voters will be informed by phone . The government reiterated charges that Athens city Hall was to blame for confusion about electoral districts , but the mayor , Dimitris Avramopoulos insisted that the government was exclusively responsible for any procedures relating to elections. (11/10/2002 12:20:00 μμ) [04] European Commission report on Cyprus – historicGreek Foreign Minister , George Papandreou desribed as historic, the European Commisision s decision to include Cyprus among the 10 candidate countries for admission to the E.U. Mr. Papandreou , however, said that a critical two-month period follows as the final decision will betaken in Copenhagen, in December while he stressed that Greece supported Turkey s European prospect.On his part , Turkish Foreign Minister Sukru Giurel repeated threats about Cyprus division if the island was admitted into the E.U without a previous resolution of the political issue. On the contrary , Turkish political party leaders kept low tones in their comments regarding the European Commission s report. (11/10/2002 12:21:00 μμ) [05] Journalist, Thanassis Paparigas diedJournalist Thanassis Paparigas and husband of the general secretary of the Greek Communist party , Aleca Papariga succumbed to his injuries this morning after a road accident on Wednesday.Thannasis Paparigas , whose father was the founder of the General Confederation of Greek workers , was a low profile man and journalist of the Rizospastis newspaper. (11/10/2002 12:22:00 μμ) [06] Ecumenic Patriarch Vartholomeos nominee for Nobel Peace awardAccording to reports, Ecumenic Patriarch Vartholomeos along with two others is a nominee for the Nobel Peace award.The other two nominees will be announced today with Patriarch Vartholomeos being a frontrunner for urging religions to save the planet and a group which works for bridges between religions. Vartholomeos is known as the – Green Patriarch was presented with the Ecology award in Oslo, a few months ago.
