Temperatures in Athens between 15C to 22C and in Thessaloniki between 11C to 19C.(2/10/2002 12:16:00 μμ) [02] Cyprus among countries to conclude E.U accession talks in DecemberPrime Minister Costas Simitis yesterday chaired a meeting of senior government officials focusing on foreign policy, in light of an upcoming working visit to Athens by Danish Prime Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the current president of the European Union.Replying to reporters questions after the meeting, Foreign Minister George Papandreou said that several significant decisions- regarding the selection of countries to enter the final stage for accession to E.U- will be made at a EU summit at the end of the month . Mr. Papandreou expressed confidence that Cyprus that Cyprus would be in the group of countries hoping to conclude accession talks in December. Commenting on the Iraq crisis, the Greek FM expressed hope that Baghdad’s recent decision to allow UN weapons inspectors BACK would open the channels for a diplomatic solution. (2/10/2002 12:18:00 μμ) [03] Conventional weapons system- Defendory 2002 opened in PireusNational Defence Minister, Yiannos Papantoniou yesterday inaugurated the conventional weapons system international trade fair 'Defendory 2002' which opened at the Piraeus exhibition centre yesterday.There are 500 companies from 35 countries taking part in this year's Defendory, which ends on October 5 and features land, sea and air weapons systems. Russia is particularly strongly represented, with 35 companies and the same number of pavilions. In statements at the opening, Mr. Papantoniou underlined the need for a unified European strategy in the defence industry, while reiterating that the Greek government planned to further support of the domestic arms industry over the next 3-4 years, by increasing its contribution to arms programmes from 12 to 20 per cent. The Bush administration wants U.N arms inspectors to be able to evacuate Iraqui scientists, technicians and officials along with their families according to a draft U.N Security resolution.
