  • [01] Weather forecast

    Rain and storms are forecast in the west, easing off from early evening. The rest of the country will see scattered cloud that may turn to light rain in the eastern Aegean islands. Winds variable, light to very strong, turning gale force in the Aegean. In the north, temperatures will range from 17C to 26C; in the west from 20C to 28C; and in the rest of the country from 19C to 30C. Temperatures in Athens between 21C and 28C; and in Thessaloniki from 20C to 29C.

    [02] Civil Servants to receive allowance

    The smoothing out allowance for 169,000 Civil Servant pensioners will begin paid as of today.

    The allowance, which will be given retrospectively from January 1st 2001 varies from 5.86 &#8211; 17.5 euros per month.

    Additionally, 15,000 pensioners will also receive the family allowance retrospectively as of 1st July 2002.

    [03] Simitis congratulates Schroeder

    Deliberations between the Social-democrats and "Greens" continue in Germany for the for the formation of a new government, in which &#8220;Greens&#8221; will undertake up to 4 ministries. The two political parties secured 306 seats in the German Parliament.

    Meanwhile, the Social-democrats&#8217; victory was hailed by most European leaders. Prime Minister Costas Simitis also contacted Mr Schroeder and expressed his satisfaction over his victory.

    From their side, the United States avoided to comment on the election results, criticizing the Chancellor&#8217;s stance on the issue of the American positions regarding Iraq.

    Finally, Stock markets reacted nervously, with investors proceeding with liquidations following Mr Schroeder&#8217;s marginal victory.

    [04] Sotiropoulou to undergo DNA test

    The Court of Appeal Committee decided that Mrs Ageliki Sotiropoulou undergo a DNA test, since her palm print was find in Damareos hideout, proving thus that she was connected with the terrorist organization "November 17".

    From her side Mrs Sotiropoulou stated to the examining magistrate that she had visited the hideout with Mr Dimitris Koufodinas 1.5 years ago when the apartment was empty at that time.

    Finally, Xiros brothers are demanding from the special magistrate to re-testify.

    [05] Tzanetakos to announce his associates

    New Democracy candidate for the Athens-Piraeus supra-prefecture Giannis Tzanetakos will announce his associates today.

    Yesterday, Pasok candidate Fofi Geanimata announced her associates, among which are Mr Christos Nikolopoulos, Anna Verouli and Michalis Romanides.

    Finally, Athens Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos expressed his support to New Democracy candidate for the Municipal elections, stressing however that that move did not constitute a step for his return to the New Democracy party.
