[02] Government to attack high prices

The Cabinet will convene today to finalize measures against expensiveness.

In a joint announcement by the Ministers of Finance and Development they said that the measures include pricing on goods, strict checks in the trading of agricultural goods and the intensification of checks for profiteering in enterprises.

Moreover, the Development ministry will try to reach a “gentlemen’s agreement” for the controlling of the cost of offered services in the private sector.

The PASOK Executive Bureau met yesterday and decided that state checks for the control of price increases should be intensified.

If the government wishes to combat inflationary pressures then it should cancel increases in Public Utilities rates, tax raids to small and medium size enterprises as well as the ban of the return of VAT to enterprises stressed New Democracy Finance official Giorgos Alogoskoufis.

Finally, government spokesman Mr Protopapas stated that everyone should cooperate for the public benefit under the difficult world circumstances internationally.

[03] Greek schools have more teachers and classrooms but fewer pupils

A study carried out by NET 105.8 has shown that although this year the number of teachers and classrooms has increased, pupils at schools have become fewer.

According to the study, it is also evident that the number of foreign pupils is continuously increasing, reaching 76% in some schools.

Besides, outlays for Education continue to be low in comparison to other European countries.

In an interview with NET 105.8 today, Education Deputy Minister Nikos Gesoulis stated that Greece is the only country in Europe that is forced to spend a lot of money on security and defence, a development that leads to the decrease of expenditure in other sectors.
