[02] Blair praises Greece for its efforts against terrorism

One of the toughest executors of November 17 terrorist organisation is being interrogated by the anti-terror squad. He is 42 years old, carries the code-name “Alekos” or “Tainias” and is considered one of the oldest second generation members of the organisation, while it is believed that he joined November 17 at the beginning of the 80s.

Meanwhile, ''November 17'' suspect Pavlos Serifis was formally charged on Thursday by an Athens prosecutor.

Serifis, who is believed to have taken part in the 1975 assassination of CIA station chief Richard Welch, was charged by prosecutor Elias Kolioussis with participation in a criminal organisation and the manufacture, procurement and possession of explosives and arms.

According to the Greek police, Serifis denies all charges brought against him.

Additionally, Thomas or Makis Serifis and Constantinos Telios are expected to testify.

Two more suspected members of the November 17 terrorist group, Iraklis Kostaris and Kostas Karatsolis, were remanded in custody with the consent of the competent prosecutor. Earlier on Thursday, the pair had refused to testify before the 4th Examining Magistrate Theoni Bouri on grounds that the case had been assigned to a special magistrate by the appellate judges council and that Bouri was therefore no longer competent to hear their testimony.

In the meantime, Foreign Minister George Papandreou and Public Order Minister Michalis Chrysohoides briefed European Union ambassadors on the latest developments on the terrorist front, assuring them that Greece is democratic and safe country that will stage the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games in a successful and safe way.

Finally, British Prime Minister Tony Blair praised the Greek authorities for rooting out the “November 17” terrorist organisation.
