[01] Weather forecast- heatwave nationwide

Temperatures reached 38C yesterday while meteorologists have warned that today will be a hotter day with 41 C forecast for the city of Athens and 42 C in some areas of central Greece. Temperatures are expected to begin gradually dropping on Thursday.

Health authorities have recommended that children , the elderly and people with heart and respiratory problems remain indoors during heatwave while the Health Ministry has taken the necessary measures to deal with emergencies.

In the meantime, the Public Power Corporation-DEH- appealed to consumers to restrict the use of electrical appliances, especially air-conditioners during peak hours.

[02] Massive manhunt for Koufontinas , key operative in the November 17 group

A police spokesman yesterday released 3 recent photographs of Dimitris Koufontinas and called on citizens who have any information about him to dial 170 or 1964. It was also officially confirmed that Koufontinas had been living with the former wife of Savvas Xiros , who is still in hospital recovering from injuries when a bomb exploded in his hands at Pireus port. Xiros spent most of the weekend testifying to a public prosecutor about alleged November 17 activities and members. According to authorities he declined to be represented by a lawyer and is cooperating fully with the police .

Yesterday, Supreme Court prosecutor , Vagellis Kroustalakis stressed that interrogation of all suspects was taking place in accordance with legal provisions, the constitution and the European accord on human rights.

Meanwhile, government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas yesterday described as ridiculous and absurd statements made by former American ambassador to Athens Tomas Niles , maintaining that November 17 was originally linked to a party which eventually became the socialist ruling party, Pasok.

The claim was also dismissed by the main opposition N.D party spokesman, Theodoros Roussopoulos , who pointed out that Niles held no official position.

[03] Environment Minister announces measures to curb air-pollution, construction of garages compulsory in all new buildings

Among the measures &#8211; which will cost 280 million euro- are lower maximum industrial emissions , subsidies of up to 50% for the replacement of old engines with new technology equipment . In reference to old technology cars, Mrs. Papandreou said that car factories and not the state will give incentives for withdrawal of old cars as from 2007

In another development , the Environment Minister tabled legislation in parliament making the construction of garages compulsory for all new buildings as part of an effort to deal with the acute parking problem in the city.

Mrs Papandreou also reassured yesterday that a recent State Council ruling forbidding the legalisation of buildings constructed without licenses after 1983 did not have a general application .
