[02] Illegal immigrants continue their entrance to Greece

Nearly half a dozen interceptions of illegal immigrants in the eastern Aegean were recorded over the weekend, while in one instance Greek authorities reported that 23 would-be migrants were rescued after the Turkish coast guard refused to tow in their small wooden vessel as it drifted in Turkish waters.

According to reports, the incident began at around 6:30 a.m. (local time) between the eastern Aegean island of Hios and the Asia Minor coast with the detection of the small vessel in Turkish territorial waters.

Greece’s merchant marine ministry later charged that two Turkish coast guard patrol boats arriving on the scene at 8:15 a.m. and 9:15 a.m., respectively, declined to aid the migrant-laden vessel.

Moreover, the Greek coast guard that was searching on Sunday for an unidentified freighter between the islands of Syros, Serifos and Kythnos (south-west Aegean), also reportedly carrying illegal immigrants, discovered and saved 52 illegal immigrants who remained stranded on the islet of Piperi and carried them to Syros. Two of them needed medical treatment and were transferred to Thriasion hospital.

[04] European army issue deliberations to continue

Deliberations on the issue of the European army will continue following Turkey’s refusal to accept the fresh compromising proposal on the issue, despite the agreement of the 15 European Union member state leaders.

Meanwhile, in and interview with the newspaper “Typos Tis Kyriakis”, Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou described the agreement as a positive result of a long term effort aiming to secure Greek interests. He also added that the European Union would continue its negotiations with the Turkish side on the basis of this agreement so as the necessary arrangements are made between the EU and NATO in their relations.

On a relative development, in and interview with the Turkish CNN, Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem stressed that the Ankara text would remain the same.

From his side, Foreign Deputy Minister Giannis Magriotis told NET 105.8 that Greece was being justified on all fronts and rejected New Democracy party President Costas Karamanlis’ accusations on insufficient briefing.

Finally, the Communist Party of Greece announced that Prime Minister Costas Simitis failed to present the results on the Euro army issue as a success.
