    Partly cloudy with a chance of rain in the northern Greece and the northern Aegean islands on Monday, mostly sunny elsewhere. West by northwesterly winds, weak to moderate. Temperatures between 12C to 24C in the north; 15C to 30C on the rest of the mainland; 17C to 27C on the islands. Mostly sunny in Athens with a chance of afternoon showers, 17C to 30C. The same forecast for Thessaloniki, 13C to 24C.

    [02] Social Security draft-bill to be tabled at Parliament

    The draft-bill regarding Social Security reform may be tabled at Parliament even this week. Labour Minister Dimitris Reppas has pointed out that the reforms are for the employees&#8217; benefit. However, the majority of parties of the General Confederation of Greek Workers, supporting the opposition have decided to go on a strike with the Civil Servants&#8217; Board the day the draft-bill will be submitted at Parliament.

    Meanwhile, the President of the General Confederation of Greek Workers Christos Polyzogopoulos stated to NET 105.8 that although the workers&#8217; struggle has entered the course of justification, some are trying to undermine the work and positive results of the efforts that have taken place up to now.

    On the contrary, the President of the Civil Servants&#8217; Board Spyros Papaspyros, who spoke to NET expressed his disagreement with the bill, while the President of the Social Security Organisations Giorgos Koutroumanis underlined that the government should understand that the Social Security Issue was not over with this bill.

    At the same time, the Ministry of Labour is preparing new social security proposals for the private insurance sector

    [03] Greece-China to sign agreements

    Bilateral agreements between Greece and China will be signed during Prime Minister Costas Simitis&#8217; contacts with Chinese officials. Mr Simitis is on six-day official visit to China.

    Today, the Prime Minister is meeting with President Jiang Zemin and Prime Minister Zhu Rongji.

    Greece is expected to be offered a status of approved destination in view of the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. Moreover, to be signed are an agreement abolishing double taxation, and a Memorandum of Undestanding for cooperation on issues related to defence industry and armaments.

    Mr Simitis, who is being accompanied by 50 businessmen attributes special importance to his visit to China, which as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council has excellent relations with Greece and supports all resolutions for the Cyprus issue.

    [04] Stephanopulos visits Australia

    The President of the Hellenic Republic Constantinos Stephanopoulos is visiting Australia to today, where he will meet with the country&#8217;s leadership.

    Mr Stephanopoulos is being accompanied by Foreing Undersecretary Giannis Magriotis and a delegation of Greek businessmen.

    [05] Papadopoulos "bomb"statement causes reactions

    In a telephone contact with Prime Minister Costas Simitis, Health Minister Alekos Papadopoulos attributed his decision to abstain from the next Parliamentary elections to personal reasons. However, Mr Papadopoulos informed the Prime Minister that he would remain in office until the next Parliamentary elections.

    Mr Papadopoulos decision caused several reactions. Government spokesman Christos Protopapas called on Mr Papadopoulos to reconsider, while Mr Tilemachos Chytyris stressed that his stay would contribute to PASOK&#8217;s victory in the next Parliamentary elections.

    Finally, New Democracy party Secretary of Political Planning Giorgos Souflias expressed the hope that Mr Papadopoulos would reconsider, since the country needed him.
