    [02] Weather forecast

    The National Meteorological Service forcasts for today a generally fine weather with scatterred cloud only in Western Greece and the Eastern Aegean. The temperature in Athens will range from 10 to 22 degrees Centigrate and in Thessaloniki from 6-20 degrees.

    [03] Strong society hindered by reaction and conservation says Simitis

    At an event organised by the European Commision yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Simitis stressed that the forces of conservation and reaction that remained active within the political life are hindering the creation of a strong society. He also underlined the need for "clean" solutions and progressive slashings for a humane society.

    [04] Karamanlis urges the government to aid the judiciary system

    New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis asked for the opening of Bank accounts of businessmen whose cases are at court and called on the government to contribute to the judicial authorities´ task.

    In reply, government spokesman Christos Protopapas said that Mr Karamanlis should stop presenting himself as a protector and instigator of Justice.

    From its side the New Democracy anounced that Mr Protopapas should be addressing the government and not the main opposition party.

    [05] Radio-tv committee to meet on March 14

    Committee Chairman Vasilios Lambrinides anounced to the Parliamentary Committee of Institutions and transparency that the national radio-television committee will discuss on March 14 the the recent tv programmes that caused problems to the countrys political life. These programmes were related to corruption issues.

    [06] Government promises creation of working positions

    According to the daily "Ta Nea", the government is planning to equalize each child of a family with two pension years for their parents. This reform lies within the framework of the new social security policy.

    In tandem, Prime Minister committed himself for equal opportunities for men and women in the market.

    From his side, Labour Minister Dimitris Reppas anounced that the governments target is to create 1,600 new units by 2004 that will offer aid to housholds and day nurseries.

    With the materialisation of these programmes about 8,100 new working positions will be created from which basically women will benefit.

    [07] All transactions only in euros as of today

    As of today, all transactions will be carried out only in euros. Those who are in possession of drachmae, can exchange them for euros at the Bank of Greece. The exchange period for coins is two years and for banknotes ten years.

    [08] Cabinet to hold meeting today

    The Cabinet is holding a meeting at 13:30 today under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister Costas Simitis on issues related to foreign and national defence policy.

    Meanwhile, Mr Simitis had a telephone conversation with his British counterpart Tony Blair yesterday evening on the issues to be discussed during the informal summit meeting due to be held in Barcelona on 15 and 16 March.

    The European Union constituent assembly met in Brussels yesterday with the participation of 105 representatives of state-members in an attempt to submit a joint proposal that will lead to the creation of the first European constitutiot
