Chance of cloud in Thessaloniki, temperatures from 6C to 12C.[03] Permanent hiring of employees working under contracts in the public sectorPrime-minister Kostas Simitis meets with competent ministers at noon today to discuss the issue of the permanent hiring of employees working under various types of contracts in the public sector. The Ministry of Interior has listed down at least 20000 people working under contracts in the public sector, of which 10000 are working in municipalities.[04] Teachers of Technological Institutes suspend strike mobilisationsAbout 80 thousand students of the Technological Institutes return to school today , following the decision of the Federation of Technological Institute teachers to suspend strike mobilisations which had paralised the schools for over 4 weeks.[05] IKA doctors on strike from February19-25Not satisfied with the Labour minister s proposals , IKA doctors have decided to continue strike mobilisations from February 19-25.During this time they will treat only emergency cases . Representatives of the IKA doctors will meet on March 1st to decide on their further satnd.[06] Decisions about the future of the national air carrier in the next few days.The government is expected to announce its decisions about the future of the national air carrier in the next few days as the prospective buyers of a 51% share in the Olympic Airways-Australian consortium IAS-has not submitted the necessary letters of guarantee, within the extended deadline. Among the measures discussed are the reduction and suspension of unprofitable flights, cut backs on functional expenses and changes of labour contracts.[07] General secretary of Pasok, Kostas Laliotis says, conditions in Greece mature for multiparty center-left governmentIn an interview with the newspaper "Sunday Eleftherotipia", the general secretary of the Pasok party, Kostas Laliotis said that conditions in Greece have matured for a political changeover from the era characterised by the interchange of the ND and Pasok parties in the government to a new era of a Center-Left multiparty government. Mr. Laliotis proposal has given rise to multiple reactions.Commenting, Development Minister, Akis Tsohatzopoulos and Labour Minsiter Hristos Protopappas described as positive and necessary any initiative promoting the joint action of the broader forces of the left. However, the Coaliton of the Left and Progress seems to distance itself from Pasok s political openings as its President Nikos Konstantopoulos refused the role of lifeguard and rejected cooperation in the three large municipalities . The ND party described Mr. Laliotis proposal as the Pasok party s admission of defeat in the forthcoming elections. Closing the works of the 2-day metings of the ND party Central Committee, ND party President Kostas Karamanlis made proposals to other parties saying that competence and not party identity will be a criterion in our future government. [08] Public Order Minister denied allegations about evidence on activities of November 17 terrorist organisationPublic Order Minister, Mihalis Hrisohoidis categorically denied allegations about the existence of key-evidence related to the activities of the November 17 terrorist organisation. Mr Hrisohoidis also denied that there is pressure from abroad to deal with terrorism in Greece.[09] Greek foreign and alternate foreign ministers attend EU General Affairs Council in BrusselsGreek Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou and Alternate Foreign Minister, Tasos Yiannitsis are flying to Brussels today to attend the EU General Affairs Council which will focus on the ME issue. It is expected that the EU member states will announce an initiative for the resumption of peace talks on the ME issue.[10] First Greek troops left for AfganistanThe first contingent of Greek troops set to participate in an international peacekeeping force in Afghanistan flew out of Thessaloniki airport on Sunday aboard a military transport plane. Forty-nine volunteer officers and NCOs departed for Kabul to take up positions some nine kilometres outside the Afghanistan capital. Another 90 troops will follow in the next few days along with the transport of military vehicles and equipment.The first Greek soldiers in Afghanistan since Alexander the Great s Macedonian and mercenary legions fought through the very same land in the 3rd century BC are due to arrive in Kabul airport, via a stopover in Dubai, early Tuesday morning.
