    [02] Weather forecast

    Cloud was forecast throughout Greece on Monday, with scattered cloud in the northwest and local showers in the east and south, and the possibility of heavy rainfall in the Aegean. The weather was expected to improve later in the day, beginning in the west and north. Temperatures were expected to range from 1 to 11 C in the north, 4-13 C in the Ionian and trhe rest of the mainland, and 8-14 C in the Aegean. Athens will be overcast, with possibility of showers, and temperatures of 6-13 C. The same in Thessaloniki, with temperatures of 3-11 C.

    [03] Scandalides proposes public administration reforms

    Interior Minister Costas Scandalides will hold a meeting on Wednesday with the National Committee of Administration Reform to discuss a new packet of measures for Public Administration. The issues to be discussed will be related to payments, hirings, evalutation of employees and public service centres. Among the participants will be various organisations and the civil servants´board.

    According to today´s issue of the daily TA NEA, Mr. Scandalides is proposing the creation of a flexible body with increased responsibilities that will be able to deal with curruption in Public Administration.

    [04] Permanency for extraordinary employees according to EU

    According to the European Union´s directive scheduled to be incorporated in the national law, all extraordinary employees at public utitilies, public enterprises, banks and the private sector will have to enjoy permanency within 18-24 months.

    [05] IKA doctors on strike

    Only extraordinary cases will be dealt with at the Social Insurance Institute (IKA) until tomorrow due to the doctors´s strike. At the same time, doctors will hold two more five-day strikes on 19 February and 4 March demanding permancy status for 5,500 employees working on the basis of a fixed time contract, higher salaries and better health services.

    [06] Taxi drivers on strike

    Taxi drivers are holding a strike today that will last until 05:00 tomorrow in reaction to the Transport ministry´s decision to create taxi companies. As a result taxi drivers are going to hold a meeting today to decide their further stance.

    [07] Farmers to demonstrate in Athens

    The farmers´Coordination Committee is going to meet on Wednesday to decide the staging of a demonstration in Athens. In the meantime, amid disagreement, trade unionists have decided to suspend their mobilisations.

    [08] Technological Institutes closed for fourth week

    Educators of the Technological Institutes are meeting tomorrow in order to decide their futher stance. At the same time, the Technological Institutes in Athens, Pireaus, Patras, Larisa and Heraklio will remain shut for a fourth week.

    [09] Bill on enterprise-mergers to be table at Parliament today

    The bill concerning business enterprises will be tabled at Parliament today. The bill introduces incentives that boost mergers of enterprises and at the same time with certain tax measures aims at increasing employment. Specifically, enterprises will pay less taxes if they hire more employees.

    [10] Pangalos´ critisism strengthens

    According to government spokesman, former Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos will not be removed by PASOK party, following his statements against the government and the Prime Minister.

    Education Minister Petros Efthymiou stated that Mr. Pangalos´ critisism will boost PASOK´s strength, while MP Theodoros Tsoukatos stated that the ruling party would be victorious in the next elections.

    [11] PASOK Papandreou to discuss Romania and Bulgaria´s entry to NATO

    Foreign Minister George Papandreou and his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem will discuss on the sidelines of a forum in the presence of their Romanian and Bulgarian counterparts the prospects of Romania and Bulgaria´s entry to NATO. The forum is being held in Constantinople and aims at bringing closer the Christian and the Muslim worlds.
