    [02] Weather forecast

    The weather will be overcast and rainy in most parts of the country today, and snowfall on high ground. Winds moderate, easterly-northeasterly, turning to storm-force at sea with local gales.

    Athens will be overcast with drizzle in the north of the prefecture and light snow on Mt. Parnitha, temperatures from 4-7C, Thessaloniki will be slightly overcast, with temperatures from 0 to 5 C.

    The National Metereological Service has forecast bad weather conditions continuing through the week.

    Many mountainous villages have been cut off due to the heavy snowfall which has also caused problems to road transport.

    Ferry routes from Piraeus and Rafina resumed normal operations, a ban still stands for the islands of Sifnos, Milos and Crete.

    [03] Farmers mobilisations

    Today, farmers begin three-day mobilisations in many cities of the country.

    On his part Labour Minister Dimitris Reppas has reassured that the cotton price will surpass 280drs per kilo while compensation will be paid for damages on wheat crops till the end of the year.

    Pasok party, General Secretary, Kostas Laliotis said he supported farmers mobilisations but not the blockade of roads with tractors.

    [04] Labour Minister promised the social and public character of the social security system

    In an interview with the daily newspaper, "To Ethnos", Labour Minister, Dimitris Reppas stressed that reforms in the social security system would not the least influence all those who can establish pension rights till December 31, 2006.

    He also promised the maintainance of the public and social character of the social security system, as well as the level of the present low pensions.

    Mr. Reppas also assured for the consolidation of mature pension rights and the holding of a dialogue with the recognition of the special role of unions.

    [05] Meeting for the activation of the common E.U defence and security mechanisms

    The EU General Affairs Council meets in Brussels today to decide on the American-British plan -accepted by Turkey- about the operational activation of the common European Defence and Security policy defence mechanisms. The Greek government does not agree with the proposed plan and has requested the necessary reforms within the framework of the Nice summit.

    [06] Economics Ministry services on the alert during the transitional period to the euro currency

    Competent services of the Economics Ministry are on the alert to avert any exploitation phenomena in view of the holiday shopping period and the transitional period to the euro currency.

    [07] Speeding up of reforms in the health sector

    In an interview with "Sunday Eleftherotipia" newspaper, Health Minister, Alecos Papadopoulos threatened to resign unless reforms in the health sector proceed.He made clear that his only supporter is Prime-minister Simitis who gave him instructions to speed up the pace of reforms.

    [08] Taliban rule in Afganistan ended

    The U.S and its Afgan allies are giving fierce battles against fighters loyal to Osama bin Landen in the mountains of Tora Bora, in east Afganistan, where he is believed to be hidding.

    Yesterday, the Taliban surrendered their last two redoubts while the whereabouts of Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar are still unknown.

    [09] Kofi Annan to receive Nobel Peace Prize today

    U.N Secretary General, Kofi Annan who will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize today urged Washington not to expand its war on terror to Iraq.
