    [02] Preparations for 2004 Olympics

    Donald Oswald, the head of International Olympic Committee s (IOC) Coordinating Committee appeared satisfied from the reassurances the president of the "Athens 2004" organizing committee Yanna Angelopoulou gave that Greece is ready for a new round of speeding up preparations for the 2004 Olympic Games. Meanwhile, IOC technocrats have assessed that significant progress has been noted on the issue, but underlined the need of keeping strictly the set timetables.

    [03] Bill on immigration

    Immigration policy and changes in the second phase for the legalization of immigrants will be the basic topic of the first bill on immigration that Interior Minister Kostas Skandalidis will table in the Greek parliament.

    [04] 2002 state budget

    Trade unions and political parties are reacting to the state budget for 2002.

    [05] Farmers wait decisions on product prices

    Meanwhile farmers are keeping a wait-and-see stand about the prices of their products. However, the Finance ministry announced that an additional 76 billion drachmas have been secured from the EU budget for Greek tobacco and cotton growers.

    [06] Chemists say no to medicines on credit

    Chemists across the country are threatening to stop supplying medicines on credit to socially secured people. They demand that Social Security Funds pay immediately their debts to them.

    [07] Confrontation over Real Estate Registry

    The former and the present ministers of Environment, Public Works and City Planning, Mrs. Vasso Papandreou and Mr. Kostas Laliotis participated in an extraordinary general assembly of the company Real Estate SA. It was decided at the meeting that the share capital of the Real Estate Registry be increased by 21.9 billion drachmas so that the relative procedures and payments may proceed normally. Meanwhile, the major opposition New Democracy (ND) party strongly criticized the moves on the issue and in response Mrs. Papandreou accused the opposition party of using petty partisan reasoning.

    [08] DEI shares float in Athens Stock Exchange

    15% of the shares of DEI-the Greek Public Electricity corporation- will be floated to the Athens foreign exchange, as the ministers responsible for the sector decided yesterday. The board of DEI will meet today under the chairmanship of the Minister of Development Akis Tsochatzopoulos.

    [09] Athens bourse

    Small losses were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange on Wednesday. The general index dropped by 0.64%, closing at 2,747.91 points, while the volume of transactions was at 301 million Euro or 103 billion drachmas. Of the stocks trading yesterday, 189 recorded gains and 150 had losses, while the value of 24 stocks remained unchanged
