[01] Fresh plans on privatizations in the public sector
National Economy Minister Nikos Christodoulakis announced sweeping
privatizations in the public sector, while there are also plans to
promote the liberalization of the markets and privatizations, as well
as to attract foreign investments and create stronger motivation in
order to improve competitiveness.
[02] The Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou visit to Pakistan,
India and Iran
The Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou will depart tomorrow for a
visit to Pakistan, India and Iran, in an effort to strengthen the
international the alliance in the struggle against terrorism with the
participation of Muslim states as well.
[03] Piraeus Bank took over ETVA
The Bank of Piraeus bought ETVA the Greek Industrial Development Bank.
Piraeus Bank offered 173.8 billion drachmas to buy 57.8 % of ETVA's
shares, while the total sum after the exchange of shares amounts to
308.8 billion drachmas.
[04] Plans on the 2004 Olympics
The new organizing form for the 2004 Olympic Games was finalized at a
meeting of the bi-ministerial committee chaired by Prime Minister
Kostas Simitis yesterday. Prime Minister Simitis said that the
time-table for the completion of the Olympic projects should be
strictly maintained, while he reaffirmed Greece's commitment to hosting
a successful Olympiad. In the meantime, the New Democracy (ND) party
denounced the government for non-transparent procedures and delays in
the Olympic works.
[05] Changes in OTE rates
The board of the Greek Telecommunications Organization-OTE, will apply
to the National Telecommunications Committee for changes in telephone
rates. Therefore, local calls will cost 9 drachmas, long-distance calls
22 drachmas, while the standard charges on the utility bills will be
increased to 3,400 drachmas.
[06] Athens bourse
On the Athens Stock Exchange, marginal losses were recorded on
Tuesday. The general index dropped by 0.25%, closing at 2,382.73
points, while the volume of transactions was at 79.3 million Euro or 27
billion drachmas. Of the stocks trading yesterday, 75 recorded gains
and 240 had losses, while the value of 64 stocks remained unchanged.
[07] OLME holds work stoppages
The Teachers Federations OLME staged a three-hour work stoppage this
morning and will hold another three-hour work stoppage in the
afternoon, while it will also hold a protest rally outside the Ministry
of Education at noon today.
[08] Train collision in Viotia
Four people were slightly injured when two trains collided inside the
railway station of Inoi in Viotia early this morning.
