[03] Tension escalating in the ME

Tension is escalating in the ME after a Palestinian suicide bombing in a Jerusalem restaurant crowded with families last night, killing at least 15 people and injuring about 90. Two militant muslim groups Islamic Jihad and Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the bombing avenged an Israeli missile strike that killed 8 Palestinians in the West Bank.

In retaliation to the bomb attack, this morning the Israeli police entered and closed the offices of the Palestinian Liberation Organization while earlier Israeli F-16 fighter jets fired two missiles at a Palestinian police station in the West Bank. In the meantime, the Israeli Security Council chaired by Prime-minister Ariel Sharon gave the green light for a military offensive against the Palestinians last night.

The US and the EU condemned the bombing and said Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat must act now to arrest those responsible and take immediate action to prevent future attacks.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat also condemned the bloody attack and called on the Israeli government to immediately make a joint declaration for a cease fire and to start implementing the US authored truce -to-peacemaking plan intended to end the bloodshed.

Russia called both sides to stick to the peace procedures and the Mitchell' s proposals.

[04] Proposals for the Pasok party new chart

As Mr. Skandalidis stressed that the new proposals focus on 3 points, the return of the Pasok party to its base, a new type of regional setting and fresh collectivity in the political direction.

[05] Hirings in the public sector - ND party deputies launched attack on the government

After a meeting at the ND offices, ND deputies launched a strong attack against the government on the occasion of hirings in the public sector. In their statements ND deputies, Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Vyron Polydoras spoke of violation of legal procedures by the Supreme Council for Selection of Personnel and informed that the ND party will ask for the setting up of a permanent committee to check all cases.

[07] Upsurge in violence dimming hope to halt bloodshed in FYROM

FYROM jet forces bombed ethnic Albanian rebel positions yesterday after fighting flared in a northwestern town diplomatic sources said, dimming hopes that a new peace plan could halt the bloodshed.

EU envoy Francois Leotard has warned that the peace procedure is threatened by the continuation of violence.

In the meantime, a new ethnic Albanian paramilitary organization -calling itself Albanian National Army- claimed responsibility for the attack on the Skopye -Tetovo highway, killing 10 soldiers.

Washington has made an appeal to both sides to avoid bloodshed and respect the initialing of the peace accord.
