    [01] Urban centre residents flee for vacations

    A heat wave is expected to prevail in many parts of Greece today and tomorrow with the temperature reaching 39 degrees Centigrate and moderate winds blowing in most parts of the country. The temperature is expected to drop as of Wednesday. In the meantime, it is estimated that more than 800,000 residents of Athens left for the their vacations on Friday.

    No congestion was reported on the national motorways on Sunday despite the mass exodus, while about 34 and 20 passenger ships departed from the busy ports of Pireaus and Rafina respectively. However, 21 people lost their lives and 254 were injured in 179 accidents that took place in the road network all over Greece.

    [02] New Chief of Police resumes his duties

    The new Chief of Police Fotis Nasiakos is resuming his duties today, while Dimitris Polydoropoulos, Costas Passaris accomplice is to appear before the 8th investigating magistrate.

    [03] Simitis to leave for summer vacations

    After a short stay at his country house in Ayioi Theodori, Prime Minister Costas Simitis is leaving for his vacations to Sifnos on Wednesday.

    [04] Government policy should change says Tshohatzopoulos

    In his interview with the daily newspaper "Kathimerini" National Defence minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos says that the aim of the PASOK Congress should be the change of the government policy, adding that he is not going to be a presidential candidate for the PASOK movement.

    [05] Changes in the Health sector

    Referrring to the imminent changes in the Health sector as of September, Health minister Alekos Papadopoulos stated in an interview with the newspaper To Vima Tis Kyriakis that managers with increased responsibilities will undertake the administration of hospitals, while the hiring of 10,000 employees at hosptals will be accelerated.
