[01] Reactions to G8 Summit
The social Forum of Genoa announced that demonstrations will take place
next Tuesday across Italy against the police measures of the Berlusconi
government during the G8 summit. Meanwhile the G8 leaders promised
solutions to global problems based on broad cooperation with the
citizens society including the private sector, but failed to make
substantial decisions on the issues of poverty. Environment and
regional conflicts/ US president George W. Bush and Russian president
Vladimir Putin agreed however to link missile defense systems to cuts
in nuclear arsenals. The Greek Committee for the Genoa Demonstration is
organizing a rally in Athens and a march to the Italian Embassy, on
Tuesday, while amnesty international also appeared concerned over the
recent police violence. In London, about 150 people attacked the
embassies of Italy and Canada during the night, causing material
damage.
[02] Court rules IKA doctors strikes illegal
Out patient clinics of IKA the Public Social Security Fund are
expected to work normally as of today, since the court ruled that 2
strikes of IKA doctors that lasted five days each were illegal and
abusive. However, due to a general assembly of IKA doctors today to
evaluate the developments of the recent dialogue between the competent
ministries and the administration of IKA, the clinics in Athens will
work with key staff only.
[03] PM Simitis meets Theodoros Pangalos
Prime minister Kostas Simitis will meet with former minister Theodoros
Pangalos today, in view of the congress of the ruling party PASOK party
due in October. It is the first meeting in private between the prime
minister and Mr. Pangalos, after the former minister was ousted from
the Ministry of Culture last November.
[04] Cypriot Socialdemocrat Movement elections
In Cyprus, Yannakis Omirou succeeds Vassos Kliridis in the leadership
of the Cypriot Socialdemocrat Movement, after he prevailed with 1,564
votes in favor against 892 of Takis Chatzidimitriou, in the party
elections yesterday
