The pilot of the helictoper lieutenant Sotiris Tserkezopoulos lost his life.The other two members of the crew Constantinos Rentzos and Ioannis Vasiliades were rescued and were transferred to the 401 General Military Athens Hospital. Six helicopters, including the one that crashed, were conducting a military exercise that had begun from Lesvos. The causes of the accident are being examined by specialists. [02] Minimum pensions guarranteed for allDuring yesterday's meeting of PASOK's Executive Bureau, Prime minister Costas Simitis assured that the minimum pensions would not decrease, stressing that a dialogue would be conducted on Social Security System issue. The Executive Bureau approved unanimously the Prime minister's proposal to be made in the Central Committee meeting on Friday and Saturday.In the meantime, Mr. Costas Scandalides' proposal, which will be publisized today, includes two more imptant commitments: First, the Social Security System should maintain its public and social profile and secondly the financing of the Social Security System should be made by three parties. Finally, Labour minister Tasos Yianitsis is beginning a round of talks with the Confederation of Greek Workers on Wednesday and with the civil servants' board on Thursday. From his side, commenting on Mr. Simitis' statements aftet the end of the meeting of the Executive Bureau, New Democracy party spokesman Theodoros Rousopoulos described Mr. Simitis as embarassed, sibylline and vague. [03] Pangalos' proposes for next Municipal electionsPASOK deputy Theodoros Pangalos' proposal regarding the next municipal elections caused various reactions. Specifically, Mr. Pangalos proposed Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou run as a candidate Mayor for the Athens Town Hall, Culture minister Evagelos Venizelos for the Thessaloniki Town Hall and Environment minister Costas Laliotis for the Pireaus Town Hall.Referring to himself, Mr. Pangalos said that he was willing to be used by the party in any post including that of a candidate Mayor for the Athens Town Hall. From his side, government spokesman Dimitris Reppas said that it was not the right time to comment on Mr. Pangalos' statements. [04] Communist AKEL party first in Parliamentary elections in CyprusCommunist AKEL party of Dimitris Christophias is the winner of the Parliamentary elections held in Cyprus on Sunday with 34,7%. Second came President Klerides Democrat Rally party with 34%.[05] Turkey's memorandum to the EU unacceptable says ReppasReferring to Ankara's memorandum addressed to the European Union as regards the repurcussions Cyrpus' accession to the European Union would have, government spokesman described it as unacceptable and anti-European.Mr. Reppas said that Athens was reacting with calm to Ankara's threats, stressing that Ankara's movements proved that its policy on the Cyprus issue had reached a deadlock. He also added that noone could stop Cyprus' European course. From his side, the Turkish Prime minister Bouled Ecevit stated that a permanent solution of the Cyrpus issue could not be achieved without the recognition of Denktash's pseudostate, reiterating his threats for especially negative repurcussions in the case Cyrpus was acceeded to the European Union without the solution of the Cyprus issue firstly. [06] Turkey's memorandum to the EU unacceptable says ReppasForeing minister Yiorgos Papandreou met with Prime minister Costas Simitis at the Maximos Mansion yesterday and discussed about the preparations to preceed Greece's asumption of the European Union Presidency in 2003 and the Greek positions in view of the inter-governmental conference in 2004 regarding Europe's future.Mr. Papandreou also briefed the Prime minister about the results of the deliberations he had in the United States with members of the new American government. During a cabinet meeting on Thursday, the Foreign minister will present his proposals as regards Greece's preparations for the European Union Presidency and the Greek positions in view of the inter-governmental conference in 2004. [07] The EU to adopt a common Educational SystemThe European Union is promoting the convergence of the National Educational Systems of its 15 country-members, so that it can implement is own Educational policy based on the European spirit and values.The committee of Education ministers, which met yesterday reaffirmed the 15 European Union country-members' intention for a common Educational System. Greek Education minister Petros Efthymiou said that the European Union's attempt to adopt its own Educational system was a chanllenge for Greece, calling on all educators to contribute to the effort. [08] Repas comments on opinion pollCommenting on the results of Kappa Research opinion poll according to which New Democracy party is ahead of PASOK ruling party, government spokesman admitted that there were problems that PASOK was trying to solve.[09] Fuel prices to continue their downward courseFor a second consecutive week fuel prices will continue their downward course following the government's contacts with representatives of oil refineries and gas stations. At the same time however, the prices of vegetables and fruit have gone up creating inflatory pressures.For this reason the Development ministry agreed with the producers' representatives to keep prices of vegetables and fruit down. [10] Virtual transactions with EUROGreeks will have the chance to ge used to the EURO with virtual transactions that will take place during an event held at Zappeion mansion from today until Friday.[11] Two types of mutated cotton to enter the Greek market soonAgriculture minister Yiorgos Anomeritis has stated that the European Committee has already given its approval for the production of two variations of genetically mutated cotton.
