    [01] Government fears inflatory pressures

    In an attempt to combat any inflatory pressures caused by the rise of fuel prices, Development minister Nikos Christodoulakis is meeting with the representatives of oil refineries and oil companies today to ask from them to absorb a part of the oil-price increases so that the market will not suffer much from the increases in fuel prices.

    [02] 29 European countries cooperate on Ecuational level

    According to the Prague Declaration signed by 29 Education ministers including Greek Education minister Petros Efthymiou, 29 European countries, which will be cooperating on an inter-state level, will be issuing through their universities common University degrees. Additionally, degrees will be recognized by all Euroopean countries.

    [03] Dialogue to commence on Social Security System

    Labour minister Tasos Yiannitsis is expected to address an invitation for dialogue to the General Confederation of Greek Workers and civil servants on the Social Security System. From their side, the Trade Unions are insisting on the government's commitment for a three-party financing of the Social Security System. Finally, the Presidency of the General Confederation of Greek Workers is going to meet with the new Presidency of the Journalists Union in Athens.

    [04] Simitis wishes to create a strong Greece

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis invited from Chios yesterday, all progressive forces of Greece to join PASOK ruling party so that the vision for a Greece with strong economy and society, a Greece guaranteeing peace and stability in South-eastern Europe, could be materialized.

    Mr. Simitis launched an attack against New Democracy party explaining that PASOK was opposed to the main opposition party not because of its mistakes in the past, but because it lacked a policy with perspective and future.

    Commenting on Mr. Simitis statements, New Democracy spokesman Theodoris Rousopoulos said that Mr. Simitis was looking for a sheet-anchor to cover his incredibility and weakness to offer perspective to the country.

    [05] Proposal for Samara's return to New Democracy party causes reaction

    Turmoil was created in New Democracy party when deputy Michalis Liapis proposed the return of Mr. Antonis Samaras to the party. Honorary President Constantinos Mitsotakis used a harsh language accusing Mr. Liapis of disrupting the party's unity. From his side, the party's spokesman Theodoris Rousopoulos said that there was not such a question regarding Mr. Samaras return.

    At the same time, in an interview with the newspaper "Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia", deputy Dora Bakoyianni left open the possibility to run as an Athens Mayoress candidate in the next Municipal elections.

    [06] Simitis to meet with Patriarch of Alexandria Petros

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis is meeting with Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Petros at Maximos Mansion today. The Patriarch, who is on an official visit to Greece, will be accompanied by Archbishop of Athens Christodoulos.

    [07] Man arrested for attempting to attack Archbishop Christodoulos

    Police have arrested a man for attempting to slap Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All Greece, as the latter was exiting with visiting Archbishop Petros of Africa from the Athens Cathedral yesterday. Immediately afterwards, Mr. Christodoulos said the incident was "of no importance". The man was reacting in this way to Pope John Paul II's recent visit to Greece.

    [08] Papandreou to meet with U.S. government officials

    Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou, who is paying a five-day official visit to the United States, will have successive meetings with Secretary of State Colin Powell, National Security advisor of the US President George Bush Contoliza Rais, Vice President Dick Cheney and CIA Director George Tennet in Washington.

    Mr. Papandreou is going to discuss with Mr. Powell about Greek-American relations bilateral regional issues, the promotion of American investments in Greece, issues of political and economic cooperation and the boosting of police cooperation between the two countries.
