    [01] Discussion on the Social Security Issue in Parliament

    The discussion of political party leaders and the Prime minister Costas Simitis in Parliament yesterday focused on the reform of the Social Security System.

    Mr. Simitis accused the New Democracy party of hypocricy, since it presented a tough position in its site as regards the Social Security issue. The Prime minister also compared data regarding the economy and the standard of living today with that during the time when New Democracy party was ruling.

    Replying, the New Democracy party leader Costas accused the Prime Minister of choosing tension, maintaining that the budget was fake and that Mr. Simitis had lost control.

    Finally, the Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress party leader Nikos Konstantopoulos said that the Prime minister ought to reply to the criticism made by employees and the Trade Unions.

    [02] Turkey condemned for violation of Human Rights

    The Human Rights court of the European Council condemned Turkey for the violation of human rights in Cyprus during the 1974 invasion in Cyprus, accepting Cyprus's fourth inter-state lodge against Turkey. The lodge against Turkey is related to the whole spectrum of violation of human rights during the invasion and during the occupation of part of the island by Turkey. The verdict of the European Court is binding and final.

    [03] Karamanlis to visit Belgrade

    New Democracy President Costas Karamanlis is visiting Belgrade today. Mr. Karamanlis will be received by the President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Voislav Kostounica and will meet with Foreign minister Goran Svilanovic.

    [04] Invasion of the Greek airspace by Turkish war planes

    Within the framework of a militiary exercise, Turkish jet fighters and helicopters violated the Greek airspace west of Lesvos and the area of Kastelorizo seven times yesterday. In the meantime, the yearly military exercise of the Greek Navy Thunderstorm 2001, which began last Monday is under way and will end on May 12. Besides, another military exercise codenamed Sarisa 2001 will begin in Central Macedonia tomorrow and will end on May 17.

    [05] Merchant Marine minister Papoutsis in the USA

    Merchant Marine minister Christos Papoutsis met with the American Transport minister Norman Mineta in Washington yesterday. The two ministers agreed to work further for the upgrading of bilateral issues in the Merchant Marine sector and promote their cooperation in International Organisations. Mr. Papoutsis visited the headquarters of the American Anti-drug Service and had other important meetings.

    [06] Christodoulos continues his visit to Russia

    Addressing the Pontians, who welcomed him at the Greek Consulate in Saint Petesburgh yesterday, Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos said that the Greeks are not nationalists but support ecumenism. Mr. Christodoulos is continuing his official visit to Russia and today the Churches will commence discussions to settle certain issues related to the Patriarchate of Moscow and the Archibishopric of Greece.

    [07] Pope's visit to Greece beneficial says Theoktistos

    Within the framework of of the Conference of the World Council of Churhes taking place in Bucharest, the Orthodox Patriarch of Rumania Theoktistos stated that the recent visit of Pope John Paul II to Greece was beneficial. Besides, the Patriarch appeared optimistic for a possible visit of the Pope to Russia, despite the reservations of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexios.

    [08] Greek doctor maintains he can cure all kinds of cancer

    Special pathologist, pchychiatrist, oncologist and Professor of the University of Athens Eleftherios Miliopoulos maintains that he has discovered a method based on 90 steps that can cure all kinds of cancer. According to Mr. Miliopoulos the treatment is based on three axis: special nutrition, phsychological support and medication based on 30 different drugs and enzymes.

    [09] Foreign leaders to visit Crete for Battle of Crete events

    In order to be present at the events for the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark is vising Greece officially on May 17. She will be accompanied by beterans who fought in Crete 60 years ago and a delegation of businessmen, who are expected to meet with Greek officials in order to boost the economic cooperatio between the two countries. Visiting Crete will also be the Australian minister of veterans Bruce Scott, who will be accompanied by Australian officials and 22 veterans aged between 78 and 85.

    [10] Discussion on upgrading of Technological Institutes to continue

    Education minister Petros Efthymiou has stresssed that the discussion on the upgrading of the Technological Institutes will continue in Parliament next week University rectors are reacting to the draft-bill for the upgrading of the Technological Institutes with absention from their duties next Monday in order to decide on their further actions. On the contrary, the Presidents of Technological Institutes, who are meeting in Igoumenitsa tomorrow, have stated that they are satisfied with the draft-bill and are expected to end their mobilisations.

    [11] Olympic villages to host about 11.000 journalists

    The government and the Athens 2004 committee had agreed that the agreements regarding the construction of six villages to house journalists will be signed on May 31. The villages will be constructed in Marousi, Pallini, Agios Andreas and Amygdaleza and will host 11.000 journalists during the Olympic Games.

    [12] Visas for foreigners living and working in Greece

    Thousands of foreigners, who are living and working in Greece, will be allowed to stay in Greece according to the new law for immigrants which will be valid from June 2. The immigrants will have to submit the supporting documents within two months.

    [13] Marginal loses in Athens Stock Exchange yesterday

    The General Share Price Index of the Athens Stock Exchange yesterday dropped slightly by 0,05%, closing at 3.111,48%.
