    [01] Return of Giorgos Souflias to the ND party

    The return of Giorgos Souflias to the New Democracy party has sealed the party's 5th congress, whose sessions concluded yesterday with the election of the new members of the Central Committee.

    Mr. Souflias stated that he returned to the New Democracy party without setting any terms and preconditions, but as a soldier in the struggle for a modern centre-right party.

    The President of the New Democracy party Kostas Karamanlis welcomed him home - as he characteristically said - and spoke of an open party which represented the centre wing. The two men will have a private meeting in the next few days.

    [02] Prime-minister Simitis called for the support of the Pasok party parliamentary team

    During a dinner in Thesaloniki with the deputies and secretaries of the prefectural committees of the first and second electoral districts, Prime-minister Kostas Simitis underlined that the government needed the support of the Pasok parliamentary group and party organizations.

    Mr. Simitis praised the role of Northern Greece in the development of the Balkans and stressed that the government had a visionary policy.

    [03] New attack against Economics Minister Yiannos Papantoniou

    Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos launched a new attack related to cuts in the defence armament budget against the National Economy Minister Yiannos Papantoniou.

    In an interview with the Sunday newspaper " To Vima " he spoke of serious mistakes of the government's economic staff. He also criticised Prime-minister Simitis describing the dilemma " defence or social policy as a neoliberal attitude".

    [04] Grand event in Thessaloniki to mark the 20th anniversary of Greece's admission to the EU

    In the meantime , a grand event was organised in Thessaloniki yesterday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Greece's admission to the European Union.

    Present at the event among others were Prime-minister Costas Simitis , the President of the European Commission Romano Prodi and the leader of the main opposition ND party Costas Karamanlis.

    Mr. Prodi described Greece as the wise neighbour of the Balkan countries, while Mr. Simitis underlined the importance for the European Union's enlargement.

    [05] Universities nationwide closed in protest against upgrading of Technological Institutes

    Universities nationwide will remain closed for 3-days in protest against the draft bill related to the upgrading of Technological Institutes On their part professors at Technological Institutes will abstain from their duties till Friday accusing University professors of racist behaviour.

    [06] Problems in the new Athens airport - Olympic Airways cancels 10 daily flights

    Problems continue in the new Athens international airport in Spata. In an effort to facilitate the operation of the airport, the Olympic Airways Company which has the largest number of flights and passengers has decided to cancel 10 daily flights till April 18.

    The board of the Olympic Airways Company believes that all the problems will have been resolved till Easter for the smooth function of the new airport.

    From Thessaloniki, commenting on the problems arisen at the opening of operations in the new airport, Prime-minister Simitis stated that employees needed time to adjust to new technology and reminded of the problems during the opening of the airports in Milan, Honk-Kong and Seoul.

    [07] Coastal Guard -successful operation to rescue 447 illegal immigrants

    The special forces of the Coastal Guard carried out successfully a giant operation to rescue 447 illegal immigrants, among them 40 children on board a Turkish vessel which run aground in Karystos.

    The 3 Turkish slave traders, who were arrested will appear before the public prosecutor in Chalkis today.

    [08] Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou will visit Ancara next week

    Foreign Minister Yiorgos Papandreou will have successive meetings with the Yugoslav Prime - minister Zoran Zizic, the former Russian Prime - minister Gefgeni Primakof, the former American Secretary of State William Cohen and his Finnish counterpart Erki Touomigia in Athens today.

    At the end of next week Mr. Papandreou will visit Ankara, where he will meet with his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem, the Turkish Prime minister Bulent Ecevit, Vice President Mesout Yilmaz and the leader of the nationalist party and member of Turkey's coalition government, Mr. Bachtseli.

    [09] Cyprus Foreign Minister will meet with American Secretary of State

    The President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides stated yesterday that the forthcoming meeting of the Cypriot Foreign Minister Yiannakis Kassoulides with the American Secretary of State Colin Powell indicates that the United States administration is willing to resolve the Cyrpus issue soon. He also added that the Cypriot government would evaluate the results of the meeting after examining the stance of the American State Department.

    [10] Weather forecast

    The National Meteorological Service has forecast for today a cloudy day with rain and storms but a gradual improvement of the weather in the afternoon in most parts of the country. Strong north easterly winds to gale force winds locally in the Aegean.

    The temperature in Athens will range from 6 to 14 degrees Centigrade, in Thessaloniki from 4 to 10 degrees and in the rest of Greece from 7 to 16 degrees centigrade.
