    [01] Pope John Paul II to visit Greece on May 4

    Pope John Paul II will visit Greece officially in the beginning of May fulling thus his dream to follow Apostotle Paul's steps in Greece. This was anounced officially yesterday by the Vatican.

    The Pope is the first pontiff to visit Greece since the Schism of Churches in 1054 and is expected to arrive in Athens on May 4. The following day he is expected to visit Syria. The 80-year old pontiff is also visiting Malta on May 8 and will return to the Vatican on May 9.

    [02] Inauguration of ''Eleftherios Venizelos'' airport in Spata

    The new Spata airport will be inaugurated at 12 noon today by Prime minister Kostas Simitis, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Kostis Stefanopoulos.

    A few minutes after 3 p.m. the first two airplanes -one from Rhodes and the other from Montreal- will land at "Eleftherios Venizelos" airport, while the first take off will take place on Thursday morning.

    To facilitate the guests, who are expected to be over 2.500, traffic in roads leading to the airport, and mainly on Mesogeion avenue, will be controlled by the traffic police, as of 8 a.m. today.

    In the meantime, Environment and Town Planning minister Kostas Laliotis yesterday expressed his intention to resign from his post, if it was proven that the Greek state had a loss from the renewal of the contract for the construction of the new airport.

    It should be noted that the New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis will finally attend the inauguration ceremony.

    [03] National plan for combatting poverty

    Following his meeting with the Prime minister Kostas Simitis yesterday, Labour minister Tasos Yiannitsis stated that the government was promoting a national plan for the combatting of poverty.

    Tomorrow, Mr. Yiannitsis will meet again with Mr. Simitis to discuss about the Social Security issue, while on Thursday the government committee will convene to talk about fiscal policy and social protection.

    [04] Ecevit pleased with Tsochatzopoulos' recent statements

    Referring to National Defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos's recent statements the Turkish Prime minister Bouled Ecevit described them as a pleasant development. The Turkish Prime minister points out however, that the situation in the Aegean consists a joint problem.

    In the meantime, European Union expansion minister Guinter Ferhoigen underlined the need for complementary efforts on behalf of Ankara on the rights of minorities and the abolition of the death penalty.

    [05] Compound interests issue to be solved soon

    The government is promoting a solution on the compound interests issue. The final decisions and regulations, which were presented by National Economy minister Yannos Papantoniou, will be tabled at Parliament in the following days.

    [06] Deputies can exercise another profession says ND party

    Following the reactions of its deputies, New Democracy party finally decided that deputies can exercise another profession at the same time, while being deputies. The decision was reached yesterday following a meeting of the party cadres under the chairmanhip of their leader Costas Karamanlis.

    [07] Fire raging in Samos

    More than fifteen fire brigade vehicles have been sent to the island of Samos to support the fire-fighting forces, trying to put under control the fire that broke out yesterday afternoon near Karlovasis, Samos.

    [08] 1,14% rise in the Athens Stock Exchange yesterday

    The General Share Price Index of the Athens Stock Exchange rose yesterday by 1,14% closing at 3.082,64 points.
