    [01] Simitis on a 6-day official visit to India

    Prime minister Costas Simitis yesterday arrived in India on a six day official visit, accompanied by minister of Development Nikos Christodoulakis, minister of Press, Dimitris Reppas, Foreign undersecretary Elisavet Papazoi, National Defence undersecretary Dimitris Apostolakis and many businessmen.

    Mr. Simitis will meet with government and state officials and will also receive an honorary doctorate by the new Delhi University. Furthermore, the Greek delegation will visit the cities of Bombay and Jaipur. Cooperation agreements are expected to be signed in the sectors of economy, agriculture and tourism.

    In the meantime, pleas for additional aid are being made for the earthquake stricken areas of India by the International Red Cross.

    [02] Denktash does not wish solution of Cyprus issue says Klerides

    In his interview with the newspaper "Isimerini" President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides has stated that Turkish- Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash does not wish a solution of the Cyprus issue unless the existence of two separate states is recognized or some sort of loose Confederation is establishedd.

    Meanwhile, Mr. Klerides, who is in Lebanon, had talks with his Lebanese counterpart Emil Lahoud on the Cyprus issue, on issues related to the European Union and on ways to boost Cypriot-Lebanese relations.

    [03] Famous composer Xenakis dies in Paris

    Iannis Xenakis, one of the most eminent modern composers, died in Paris at the age of 78 yesterday.

    Being a Mathematician and an Architect, he bridged Science and Music with his work. Having introduced computers and Mathematics in musical compositon, Yannis Xenakis was one of the world pioneers in his field.

    Personalities from the world of the Arts and Sciences, as well as politicians, underlined the huge gap his death had left in Greece and abroad.

    [04] Á group of scientists removed half a cubic centimetre of radioactive soil at Asvestochori

    A suitably equipped group of scientists of the Greek Committee of Nuclear Energy removed about half a cubic centimetre of radioactive soil from Forest Kouris at Asvestochori, Thessaloniki last Saturday.

    It should be noted that a number of plutonium slabs were also removed from Asvestochori last week. Inhabitants of Asvestochori demonstrated yesterday, while members of the Greek Communist party went on with a symbolic sit-in of a barracks in Sindos.

    [05] Social Security System changes to be introduced soon

    The report of a British company on the reform of the Social Security System in Greece will be available in the coming days. According to information, the dialogue between the goverment and representatives of the employees regarding the changes to be introduced in the sector will begin in mid March.

    At the same time, the Labour Institute of the General Confederation of the Greek Workers has prepared a special research on the course of the Social Security System.

    [06] Monitoring of the Athens Stock Exchange by committee

    The Body against Economic Crime will carry out an investigation on 140 companies participating in the Athens Stock Exchange to check whether the capital drawn from the Stock Exchange was used investments.

    In tandem, the Capital Market committee and the Administration of the Stock Market will go ahead with the creation of a service which will be checking transactions of stocks in order to prevent any sort of speculative phenomena.

    [07] The government to promote privatisations

    According to "Kyriakatikos Typos" newspaper, government officials are focusing their efforts on the promotion of privatisations and the boosting of structural changes.

    First in line come Olympic Airways, Spata Airport, the Electric Power Corporation and lastly the Social Security System.

    [08] Bakoyianni sees signs of fatigue in PASOK & New Democracy

    In an interview with Sunday newspaper "To Vima Tis Kyriakis", New Democracy deputy Dora Bakoyanni says she can see signs of fatigue not only in ruling PASOK party but also in the New Democracy party as well, adding that dismissals of party members as that of Mr. Yiorgos Souflias is a wrong move.

    Referring to Mayor of Athens Dimitris Avramopoulos' communicative policy, she describes it as correct, adding at the same time to be willing to help with the return of Centre wing party members back to New Democraccy.

    In the meantime, in an interview published yesterday in Sunday newspaper "Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia", New Democracy deputy Michalis Liapis says there are possibilities for cooperation between the New Democracy party and the party to be set up by Athens Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos.

    From his side, Mr. Avramopoulos, who is in Cyprus, made it clear that he would carry on with the formation of his party.

    [09] Bering to appear before the public prosecutor

    36 year-old Frants Constantine Bering, who is accused of abduction and seduction of a minor, is to appear before the public prosecutor in Thessaloniki today to testify regarding 14 year-old American Linsey Sandrog, whom he met through the Internet and whom he convinced to come to Greece in order to meet him. Bering was arrested in Pendeli last week.
