    [01] Spectacular celebratios to welcome the new millenium .

    People all over the world , from New York to Moscow and Las Vegas to Rio welcomed the first year of the new millenium with songs ,dances and spectacular fireworks.

    In Greece , the bad weather that prevailed in most parts of the country did not stop people from taking part in the celebrations organized in all big cities.

    [02] New Year wishes to the President of the Republic .

    In Athens the President of the Republic, Kostis Stefanopoulos yesterday received New Year wishes from the Greek political leadership, as well as judicial and diplomatic authorities.

    In turn, Mr. Stefanopoulos conveyed his best wishes to Prime- ministere Kostas Simitis for peace, prosperity and political calm.

    [03] National Defence Minister visited military hospitals

    on New Year Day

    National Defence Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos gave presents to the 20 injured Palestinians hospitalized at KAT hospital.

    Mr. Tsochatzopoulos stressed that the Greek and Palestinian people were connected with long-standing bonds of friendship.

    Earlier, Mr. Tshochatzopoulos had visited the military hospitals and later during the cutting of the New Year's Cake at the armed forces ,he wished for prosperity, social solidarity, and justice.

    Present were the President of the Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos, Archbishop of Athens and all Greece Christodoulos and New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis with his wife.

    [04] Greece officially joined the European Union's single currency

    club

    Greece officially entered on Monday ,January 1st into the the European Union's Economic and Monetary Union ,as its 12th member .

    In his New Year message ,Prime-minister Kostas Simitis underlined that 2001 brought Greeks to the start of a new cycle of common efforts adding that we should overcome every form of mediocrity ,to leave behind practices ad attitudes of the past .

    Banks and the Athens stock exchange on Tuesday will greet the new single currency era with a dress rehearsal, to check that all their systems are properly adjusted to the demands of the euro. They will open to the public on Wednesday with transactions as usual.

    On Tuesday, most stores will also be closed, as they remained open on Sunday, last day of 2000.

    [05] The deadline to collect 2001 car stickers expires on February

    As of Wednesday, January 3rd, motorists will be able to collect their special 2001 stickers indicating payment of registration fees, at the National, Agricultural and Alpha banks.

    The deadline to acquire the stickers expires on February , 16th.

    [06] Fuel prices will change every 3-days

    A new draftbill to be tabled in the parliament by the Ministry of Development provides for changes in fuel prices every 3-days . The aim of the Ministry of Development is to boost competition between gas stations and refineries .

    [07] Archibishop of Cyprus Hrisostomos

    Archibishop of Cyprus Hrisostomos will send letters to the Churches of America and Britain calling them to mediate for the liberation of Panikos Tsiakurmas ,arrested by the illegal occupation regime of the Northern part of Cyprus.

    [08] State Lottery ticket

    State Lottery ticket , number 88824 -row 51st- wins 1 billion drs.Numbers 88827 and 88821 of the same row win 500 million drs each while all tickets with the number 88824 -regardless of row win 2 million drs each .

    [09] Holiday makers return to Athens

    As life slowly gets back to normal in Athens, after the Cristmas and New Year holidays, motorist on Monday began returning to the capital from vacations in the countryside. The traffic police have made extra inbound lanes available on the 2 national highways to facilitate incoming vehicles.

    [10] Weather forecast

    After the rains and storms which marked the New Year, the weather is gradually improving , permitting domestic shipping lines to resume their regular schedules, following the recent ban imposed due to galeforce winds.

    The National Meteorological Service forcasts for today a cloudy weather with local rain on the Aegean islands, Crete and the Dodecanese.

    Later the weather will improve. It will be sunny in the rest of the country with moderate northerly winds which will later abate.

    The temperature in Athens will range from 7 to 15 degrees Centigrate and in Thessaloniki from 4 to 12 degrees.
