THE VOICE OF GREECE 14/11/2000 4:17:26 μμ [01] Deliberations in Athens, in view of the 6th round of proximity talks on the Cyprus issue.Following the conclusion of the 5th round of proximity talks in Geneva, the Greek and Cypriot political leaderships are holding talks in Athens to decide on the next steps in view of the 6th round of proximity talks in January.Deliberations conclude today with a meeting of Greek Prime- minister Kostas Simitis and Cypriot President Glafkos Kliridis. Mr.Kliridis had successive meetings yesterday with the Greek President Kostis Stefanopoulos , the President of the ND party Kostas Karamanlis and the honorary President of the ND party Kostantinos Mitsotakis. The President of Cyprus Parliament, Spiros Kyprianou is also in Athens for talks. In the meantime, both Turkey's Prime-minister Bulet Ecevit and the Turkish-Cypriot leader Raulf Dektash rejected the unofficial document on the rotary presidenship of the Cyprus Republic, submitted by the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan during the 5th round of proximity talks in Geneva, describing it as unacceptable and dangerous. In reference to the content of the document, Mr.Ecevit said that it was impossible to take it into serious consideration while Mr.Dektash threatened to abstend from the 6th round of proximity talks unless the text was altered adding that it was not accidental that the submission of the unofficial document coincided with the announcement of the text regarding EU-Turkey partnership relations. Commenting ,Greek Goverment Spokesman Dimitris Reppas said that it would not harm Greece , whether or not Turkey-EU approachment was achieved. In parallel, Mr.Reppas praised the Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou foreign policy, stressing that he was the architect of the Greek policy towards Turkey. In reference to the ND party's criticism , Mr.Papandreou stated that he never claimed that national issues was a personnal affair of his. Despite clarifications by the Greek Foreign Minister, the ND party Spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos stated that the absence of a clear foreign policy on national issues opened the way for self planning. [02] Reduction in interest ratesThe goverment's economic staff is promoting reduction in interest rates despite its concern over the rise in the rate of inflation in October.The Monetary Policy Council of the Bank of Greece meets today to examine the issue of reduction in interest rates. According to reports ,the Bank of Greece is expected to announce reduction in interest rates from next Wednesday and further reductions in December. [03] Greek President on a visit to the Chech RepublicGreek President Kostis Stefanopoulos is paying a two-day official visit to the Chech Republic as from yesterday. Mr.Stefanopoulos will have private talks with his Chech counterpart Vatslav Havel today.[04] National Economy Minister in BulgariaDevelopmentof economic and trade relations between Greece and Bulgaria is the subject of talks of the Greek National Economy Minister Yiannos Papantoniou and the Bulgarian President Petar Stoyianof,the Bulgarian Prime -minister Ivan Kostof and Vice-president Petar Zozef.Sofia is the second stop after Belgrade of Mr.Papantoniou tour of the Balcans. Next stop of Mr .Papantoniou tour is Skopyie. [05] Final draftbill on labour relationsLabour Minister Tasos Yiannitsis is expected to announce today the draftbill regarding changes in labour relations. The raftbill will be tabled in the parliament till the end of the month.According to reports, Mr.Yiannitsis has taken into consideration the proposals of the social partners and has improved his initial proposals. [06] New ID cards without the inclusion of religious affiliationThe Public Order Ministry announced that the new ID cards will neither include the initials X.O, which stand for Christian Orthodox .[07] Stock marketThere is concern in the Greek Stockmarket with Monday's further drop of the General Share Price Index. Specifically, the index fell by 1,62%, closing at 3.560.06 points.[08] Greek poet, Giorgos Seferis honoured at Georgetown University in WashinghtonGreek poetry and poet Giorgos Seferis were honored in an event held at Georgetown University, in Washington. The event, which was organized by the press bureau of the Greek embassy in Washington with the cooperation of the American university, was held on the occasion of one hundred years from the poet's birth.[09] Greek Public Order Minister met with the American Ambassador to AthensAmerican Ambassador to Athens, Nicolas Berns met with Public Order Minister Mihalis Hrisohoidis yesterday.Mr.Hrisohoidis assured Mr. Berns that all the necessary measures willbe taken to prevent incidents during the march from the National Technical Institute to the American embassy on November 17th. [10] Korinthos-Kalamata high-way inagurated yesterdayEnvironment and Public Works Minister Kostas Laliotis inagurated yesterday the Korinthos-Kalamata highway which reduces by half-hour the time to cover the distance from Korinthos to Kalamata.[11] Two new express lines to and from the new Venizelos Airport at SpataTwo new express lines operating on a 24 hour basis will serve passengers departing or arriving from the new Venizelos Airport at Spata .The new line will begin operating from March 2001.The fair was decided at 1 thousand drs and can be used in all means of transport.
