Mr. Simitis underlined that the only problem between Greece and Turkey was the issue of the continental shelf in the Aegean. He also added that Turkey's stand at the NATO exercise "Destine Glory" was negative, while Mr Ecevit replied that a round of talks on all the issues should open. Later, during a joint press conference, the Greek Prime minister said that the if there existed different views on certain issues between Turkey and Greece, then there should be an exchange of views. In the meantime, Washington's stand on the issue is that the participation in NATO exercises is one of the issues that could be settled with a Greek-Turkish dialogue, or under the auspices of NATO. At the same time, acting government spokesman Tilemachos Chytyris said that the hitch in NATO exercise "Destine Glory" will be discussed on a Chiefs of Staff level on November 7. It should be noted that in his recent statements regarding "Destine Glory" military exercise, National Defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos said that Greece defended its sovereign rights and that NATO justified the Greek positions. After the end of the summit meeting, the Prime minister Kostas Simitis stated that the goal for the support of political change in Yugoslavia was achieved. He also said that Greece was ready to offer the necessary help for peace and security in the region. On the sidelines of the meeting, Mr. Simitis met with the new Yugoslav President Voitslav Kostunica and FYROM Prime minister Georgiefsky. It should be noted that Mr. Simitis' visit in FYROM was the first visit of a Greek Prime minister there, a development which proves Greece's positive role in the region. New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis expressed his concern, mainly, about Greek-turkish relations, to the Greek President Konstantinos Stefanopoulos, with whom he met yesterday. The main opposition leader accused the government of selling out step by step the country's sovereign rights and called again the setting up of a Foreign policy council. From his side, the government spokesman described Mr. Karamanlis as inexperienced on handling national issues, reiterating that Greece's position was justified. [02] Papandreou continues his visit to the USAWithin the framework of his visit to the United States, Greek Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou continues his contacts with Greeks living there, whom he briefs on the Greek positions on Foreign Affairs.In view of the American Presidential elections due to be held on November 7, Mr. Papandreou had discussions with representatives of the Democrats and Republicans. [03] Thessaloniki ready for tripple celebrationOfficial events marking the triple celebration of the city of Thessaloniki's liberation from the Turkish yoke, the city's Saint Dimitrios and the anniversary of the outbreak of war with Italy on October 28 1940, will start in Thessaloniki today in the presence of the president of the Greek Republic Costis Stefanopoulos.[04] EURO's course worries EuropeEURO's collapse against the US dollar and the selling price of the American currency by 414 drachmas has created an inflationary pressure on the Greek economy.
