    [01] Prime -minister Simitis satisfied at the course of the Greek economy. The price of oil sky high

    Prime -minister Kostas Simitis appeared satisfied at the course of the Greek economy after his meeting yesterday with the President of the Republic Kostis Stefanopoulos. Among others Mr. Simitis stated that inflation was under control and the economy was on a good course.

    In the meantime the new taxation draft - bill released by National Economy Minister Yannos Papantoniou yesterday ,provides for tax reliefs amounting to 345 billion dr. The new draft -bill will be tabled in the parliament next week. In reference to the heating -oil issue, the government will decide on the amount of economic aid to low-income earners and pensioners at the beginning of November.

    Meanwhile, international rise in the price of oil has pushed the price of oil sky high. Unleaded gasoline went up by 15 dr. per liter ,diesel oil by 13 dr . while heating -oil by 10 dr per liter.

    [02] Kostas Liaskas, President of the Athens Technical Chamber was excluded from the Athens 2004 Organisational Committee

    According to an announcemnt issued by the Maximos Mansion , Kostas Liaskas, president of the Athens Technical Chamber, was relieved of his post in the Athens 2004 Organisational Committee due to public statements incompatible with the high responsibility of his post.

    Earlier, the President of the Athens 2004 Organisational Committee Yanna Aggelopoulou Daskalaki had asked for his resignation, accusing him of unacceptable criticism against Public Works Minister Kostas Laliotis. Commenting on the recent developments, the ND party stressed that good cooperation among Ministers and members of the Organisational Committee should be maintained to the end for the best preparation of the Olympic Games.

    In the meantime, Prime -minister Simitis met with the Undersecretary for Sports Giorgo Floridi yesterday and discussed issues related with the preparation of the Olympic Games.

    [03] Ecumenic Patriarch Vartholomeos in Athens

    Ecumenic Patriarch Vartholomeos will have a series of meetings with the political Leadership of the country and representatives of the spiritual life despite the private and unofficial character of his 5- day visit to Greece.

    The Ecumenic Patriarch met with Archibishop Hristodoulos yesterday , attended a dinner in his honour hosted by the Council of Greek-Turkish business approach and also spoke at an event of the Goulandri-Horn Foundation.

    Today, Mr.Vartholomeos will innagurate the offices of the Ecumenic Patriarchate in Athens.

    [04] Revision of the constitution

    A tense climate prevailed during yesterday's discussion of the Committee for the revision of the constitution on an article providing for the separation of the country in major and minor electoral districts. Seven Pasok party deputies threatened to vote down the article.

    Also the ND, the Coalition of the Left and the Greek Communist parties were against the article resulting in its withdrawal.

    [05] NATO exercise. Turkey

    The Greek Defence Ministry has called NATO to comply with all agreements regarding air-corridors of the Destine Glory exercise following yesterday's attempt by Turkey to intercept Greek air-crafts during a scheduled exercise.

    To avoid dog -fights, American commander, Esky Sehir ordered Greek air-crafts to return to the Greek FIR.

    [06] Mesut Gilmaz will visit Athens

    Turkish vice-president Mesut Gilmaz will visit Athens at the beginning of November in order to take part in the international conference of Greek-Turkish businessmen to be held on November 2-3 in Athens.

    According to reports, Mr. Gilmaz will meet with Prime- minister Simitis and Foreign Minister Giorge Papandreou while he has also asked to meet with the Archibishop of Athens Hristodoulos.

    [07] Greek-language-Turkey

    A very high interest in the learning of the Greek- language has been recently noted in Turkey. The most impressive is the creation of the department of Modern Greek language at the university of Konstantinopolis.

    [08] Creation of new sea lines

    Nobody would further have the exclusive priviledge to run a sea line said Merchant Marine Minister Hristos Papoutsis.

    He also announced the upgrading of the major ports in the country. On its part, the Panhellenic Navy Federation described the decision for the creation of new sea lines as a positive step.

    [09] Athens stock exchange

    A disappointing day for the Athens stock exchange yesterday with the general share index goingdown by 2,59 % to close at 3627,55 points.
