    [01] The EU yesterday decided to lft the oil embargo on Yiougoslavia

    The EU yesterday decided to gradually lift the economic sanctions imposed on Yiougoslavia. The first step towards this direction is the lifting of the oil embargo and the ban of international flights. The US also announced its intention to proceed to a similar move.

    In the meantime, rapid political developments are taking place in the country following the swearing in of the new president Voislav Kostunica.Yesterday, Prime minister Momir Bulatovits submitted his resignation, the old parliament was dissolved while early parliamentary elections were announced for December, 19. The four Dutch arrested on charges of murder attempt against Slobodan Milosevits were also freed.

    From Luxembourg, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou yesterday expressed satisfaction at the EU's decision to lift the economic sanctions imposed on Belgrade.

    Greek President Kostantinos Stefanopoulos, who is pauing an official visit to Letonia, warned that any change of borders in the Balkans entailed dangers for the whole region.

    Referring to the future of former-Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, Greek govt spokesman stressed that his future should be dealt as a domestic issue solely by Yiougoslavia's political forces.

    [02] UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan in Tel-Aviv

    UN Secretary General ,Kofi Annan left Geneva for Tel-Aviv yesterday at the start of a mission to the Middle East. Mr.Annan already met with the Palestinianleader Yaser Arafat in an effort to reduce the danger of war while he is expected to meet with the Israeli Prime -minister today. Mr. Barac seems willing to extend for a few days the deadline for Palestinians to halt their wave of protests as well as to participate in a summit under the auspices of the US.

    [03] National Economy Minister will present his proposals for next year's budget

    National Economy minister will meet with Prime-minister Kostas Simitis today to present his proposals for next year'sbudget. The draft-bill provides the granting of a special sum to low-income earners for the purchase of heating oil.

    Mr.Simitis will meet this afternoon with Interior Minister Vaso Papandreou, National Economy miniter Yiannos Papantoniou and Economics undersecratary Giorge Drys to examine the budgets of municipalities in view of the new budget which will be approved by the inner cabinet on Thursday.

    [04] Samina Express

    The body recovered yesterday off the island of Mykonos was identified as the missing Albanian citizen Akis Skandera, one of the missing victims of the shipwreck Samina.

    In the meantime many of the survivors of the sea tragedyhave started filling law suits against the shipping company.

    Demonstartions were held on the islands of Samos and Ikaria yesterday demandingthe upgrading of sea transport.

    [05] Strike mobilisations

    A 24 hour strike by the General Confederation of Greek Labour and Civil Servants Union today, has shut down a large number of private and public services. Grammar andHigh school teachers also participate in the strike.

    Meanwhile Athens blue buses , trolleys , electric trains and the metro will not operate till midnight today.

    Bank employees and hospital doctors continue their strike for a second day today.

    [06] President Stefanopoulos on an official visit to Letonia

    Addressing the sessions of the economic forum taking place in Riga, - with the participation of businessmen from Greece and Letonia - Greek President Konstantinos Stefanopoulos said the success of his visit to thIS country depended greatly on the agreements the businessmen of the two countries would reach.

    Meanwhile, National Economy Undersecretary Yannis Zafiropoulos said the talks president Stefanopoulos had earlier with his Letonian counterpart were successful and stressed that Athen's positive stand to boost Latonia's course towards its admission to Euro-Atlantic structures were apparent.

    [07] ND party parliamentary team convenes today

    The ND party president Kostantinos Karamanlis will chair a meeting of the ND party parliamentary team today to discuss foreign policy issues and the revision of the parliament.

    Southeastern Defence Ministers conference concluded in thessaloniki yesterday.

    The annual conference of Defence Ministers of Southeastern Europe ended in Thessaloniki yest. The object of the conference was the latest developments in Yugoslavia and security issues.

    The countries that participated in the conference agreed to promote military cooperation and strengthen bilateral agreements regarding security and stability in the region.

    On the Athens stock exchange the general share price index droped by 1.73% yesterday, closing at 3,956.87 points.
