[01] Two more medals for Greece

Akakios Kakiasvilli won the gold medal in weightlifting - the third in his carreer - in the 94 kilo category, lifting 405 kilos. I n Gymnastics Dimosthenis Tabakos won a silver medal in the rings with 9.762 points, while the Hungarian Silvester Tsolani won the gold with 9.850 points. It should be noted that Greece has won seven medals up to now, two gold, four silver and one bronze. In the meantime, Olympic champion Ioannis Melissanides who competed today in Gymnastics came seventh. Kostas Thanos is expected to take part in the semi-finals in Wrestling.

All Greek political leaders have sent congrulatory cables to the Greek Olympic champions.

At the same time, Greece and Australia signed a memorandum regarding a sports agreement in Sydney yesterday. The agreement was signed by the Greek Sports undersecretary Yiorgos Florides and the Australian executive manager of the Sports Council Jim Ferguson.

Petrol tank-truck owners go on strike The ongoing international fuel crisis will cause added headaches for the Greek government and for motorists, due to a strike which began at midnight yesterday by the owners and drivers of petrol tank-trucks, in support of their demands for lower taxes on fuel.

[03] Cyprus rejects Soto's document

The fourth round of proximity talks on Cyprus will wind up on Tuesday with no evident progress. On a relative development, the Greek-Cypriot side rejected yesterday United Nations Secretary General's special advisor Alvaro de Soto's document regarding the constitutional aspect of the Cyprus issue, since it did not lie within the United Nations resolutions and summit agreements for a bizonal and bicommunal federation.

The relevant decision was taken uninanimously by the Cyprus National Council and will be handed by President Klerides to Mr. Alvaro de Soto today, who is expected to visit Cyprus next month.According to Mr. Soto's document the office of Presidency and Vice Presicency should rotate between the two sides. At the same time, the President and the Prime minister should be granted different powers.

Besides, Cypriot and Turkish militaries will meet at the same table today for the first time after 1963. The meeting is taking place in Brussels within the framework of deliberations for setting the needs of European Defence force of the Western-European Union, which is under establishment.

Finally, addressing a European Parliamentary summit held in Rome yesterday, the Speaker of the Greek Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis referred to the need for the continuation of Cyprus' accession process to the European Union, underlining at the same time that pressure should be exerted to Turkey in order to comply with the Helsinki terms.

[04] Greek Communist party deputy Leon Avdis dies yesterday

He was expelled to Sikinos during dictatorship in Greece. His funeral will take place at the public expence at the First Cemetery of Athens at 4pm tomorrow. The Greek leadership and the Mayor of Athens Dimitris Avramopoulos have sent their sympathies to his relatives.
