The price of crude scored a new record in New York, reaching $37.28 per barrel. In tandem, the International Energy Service estimates that oil prices will remain high for at least 6 months.At the same time, in a meeting which began in Luxemburg yesterday, European Union country-member Transport ministers are examining ways of dealing with the repurcussions of the oil crisis. From its side, the Greek government is thinking of taking measures in support of the low incomes. During ruling PASOK's meeting of the Executive committee yesterday, Prime minster Costas Simitis referred to the repurcussions of the oil crisis, stressing that the government was determined to solve the problems created to the Greek people. Specifically, according to Mr. Simitis allowances will be given to low pensioners and the low incomes, while the price of oil for agricultural use will drop. It should be noted that the General Confederation of the Greek Workers asked yesterday from the competent ministers financial aid for the low incomes and low pensioners. [02] Cyprus issueFollowing his meeting with Prime minister Costas Simitis yesterday, during which he briefed him on his recent visits to New York and Belgrade, Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou stated that Greece and Cyrpus were making efforts for the solution of the Cyrpus issue within the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.At the same time, the Cypriot government denounced at the Security Council Turkish Foreign minister Ismail Cem's unacceptable statements on the Cyprus issue made during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly. According to information from New York, the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides addressed a letter to the President of the Security Council drawing his attention on Mr. Cem's statements. In his letter he states that Turkey's stand for a solution of the Cyprus issue based on the creation of a confederation does not coincide with the United Nations resolutions regarding the resolution of the Cyprus problem. [03] Human Rights European Court examines Cyprus' recourseTurkish Foreign minister Ismail Cem had a meeting with the Community high commissioner responsible for the European Union expansion Gynder Ferhoygen, during which they discussed the content of Turkey's association relation with the European Union.At the same time, the European Court of Human Rights concluded the hearing of the fourth inter-state recourse of Cyprus against Turkey regarding the violation of Human rights in Cyprus. It is Cyprus' first recourse examined by the plenum of the European Court. [04] Karamanlis concerned over Greek National issuesNew Democracy party critizised strongly the government yesterday following a meeting among party officials under the chairmanhip of the party's leader Costas Karamanlis.Mr. Karamanlis referred to the difficult position Greece was in now, adding that he was concerned over the developments of Greek national issues. The New Democracy leader also said that Greece's stand on the Cyprus issue was crystal clear, pointing out that Greece would not recognize the regime in the occupied parts of the island or accept any kind of division through some form of confederation. [05] Papandreou anounced new NATO Honorary PresidentNATO has anounced that Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou took over the honorary Presidency of the body for one year.The Greek Foreign minister succeeded his German counterpart Joschka Fisher for one year and specifically until September 17th, 2001. The role of the President in honor, is mainly coordinating. [06] Church referendum prejudiced says SimitisDuring the meeting of the ruling PASOK's Executive committee, Prime minister Costas Simitis referred to the current political developments. Among other things Mr. Simitis referred to the referendum held by the Church, describing it as prejudiced and non- democratic.However, he stated that the government intended to start a dialogue with the society and the Church on the relations between the State and the Church. As regards economic interests in Greece, he admitted that they existed and acknowledged their role. However, he pointed out that the government would not take sides with anyone. [07] Entry examination results availableEntry examination results to Universities and Technological Institutes will be available at all Lyceums all over the country as of today.[08] 5.250 new jobs in the Health sectorThe draft bill regarding the reform of the National Health System will be tabled at Parliament by the end of 2000, while 5.000 hospital employees and 250 doctors will be hired within October.This was anounced by the Health minister Alekos Papadopoulos yesterday.
