    [01] Simitis coordinates and Daskalopoulou presides committees for "2004 Olympics"

    The government's priority is the successful organization of the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, Prime minister Costas Simitis said, after a bi-ministerial meeting. He added that he would personally undertake the coordination of a special supervisory committee to monitor activities and projects related to the Games.

    In addition, he announced that Yanna Angelopoulou-Daskalaki would be the president of the Orgnanisational Committee "Athens 2004".

    Later, Mr. Simitis met with the deputy President of the International Olympics Committee Zacques Rogue. The International Olympics Committee was releaved by the Prime minister's decision to place Yanna Angelopoulou- Daskalaki head of the Organisational Committee of the "2004 Olympics" and to undertake himself the supervision of the whole project.

    Meanwhile, the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch desribed Mr. Simitis' decision as a decisive one, stating that it would bring the Games back to the course of success. It should be noted that previous month, Mr. Samaranch had warned that due to the slow pace of works, the Games might be taken away from Athens, advising for drastic measures to be taken by the end of the year.

    From its side, New Democracy party approved Yanna Daskalaki-Agelopoulou appointment as head of the organisational committee, but at the same time raised questions related to the formation of a National Olympics Council, the upgrading of the National Olympic Games Committee, the briefing of the Parliament regarding the course of preparations and the promoting of joint decisions for the construction works of the Olympic Games.

    The Olympic flame lits in the ancient stadium of Olympia, in view of the Olympic Games in Sydney and the event was aired live by Greek Television channel ET-1 at noon. The flame will arrive in Sydney on September 15th.

    [02] No additional measures for drachma's incorporation to Euro - Zone

    National Economy minister Yannos Papantoniou and the Governor of the Bank of Greece Loukas Papadimos held one hour consultation, focusing on the Greek economy and the recent significant hikes in fuel prices.

    Following the meeting, Mr. Papantoniou ruled out that new measures would be taken to incorporate the drachma to the Euro zone, while the Governor of the Bank of Greece said that there was no hurry to reduce interest rates.

    [03] President Klerides recovers and resumes his duties

    The President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides resumed his duties again following an operation he underwent in "Evagelistria" clinic in Cyprus. Mr. Klerides will remain in the clinic for several days, where from he will perform his duties.

    The Cypriot President was visited by the United States ambassador Donald Butler and the British charge d' affaires in Nicosia, who wished him on behalf of the British Prime minister Tony Blair and the Foreign minister Robin Cook a quick recovery.

    In the meantime, the Cypriot Foreign minister Yannakis Kasoulidis, who met in Rome with his Italian counterpart Lamberto Dini, assertained that positive changes have taken place in Italy's stance regarding the Cyprus issue.

    Specifically, Italy agrees with Nicosia that Cyprus' accession to the European Union should go ahead regardless to developments on the Cyprus issue.

    Mr. Vladimir Prygin will be the new Russian special representative on the Cyprus issue replacing Mr. Vladimir Gizof. His appointment was anounced by the Russian ambassador in Nicosia Vladimir Pavlinof outside "Evagelisria" clinic, where he had visited President Klerides to wish him a quick recovery on behalf of the Russian President Vladimir Poutin.

    [04] Y. Karatzaferis excluded from ND's parliamentary group

    New Democracy party President Costas Karamanlis finally decided to exclude Mr. Yiorgos Karatzeferis from his party's parliamentary group due to comments he made regarding the party's leadership. New Democracy deputies Yiannis Varvitsiotis and Yiannis Kefaloyiannis refused to participate in the disciplinary committee which would convene to decide about Mr. Karatzaferis. Meanwhile, Mr. Karatzeferis inisted on his views, demanding the withdrawal of the party's spokesman Aris Spiliotopoulos.
