    [01] Plans for structural changes

The financial team of the government is called to proceed to the immediate implementation of the convergence program, following the positive reports of the European Commission and the European Central Bank on Greece's entry in the Euro zone.

The national economy minister Yannos Papantoniou said that the time has come to go ahead with all the structural changes the government has planned. 15 public enterprises and organizations will be privatized and their shares will be floated in the stock exchange, while the liberalization of the monopoly markets will follow and restrictions to the so-called closed professions will be lifted as well.

At the same time, a stockbroking firm will carry out a study on the social security system and the creation of a fund for the development of new technologies.

[02] Developments following the Euro currency's new record

The new decline record on European level of the Euro against the dollar which was worth 88.53 cents has caused strong concern. In reply to publications of the foreign press, the government spokesman Dimitris Reppas said that the drop of the Euro was not a recent phenomenon and could not be associated with Greece's entry in the Euro zone.

[03] Meetings on the 2004 Olympic Games projects

The inner cabinet deals with the course of the public works projects for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. In Brussels, Culture minister Theodoros Pangalos met with the vice-president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rog yesterday and reassured him that Greece would respect the time-table of the Olympic works.

Sports Undersecretary Giorgos Floridis met with the prime minister Kostas Simitis yesterday and said afterwards that the completion of the works in time was the government's priority. Athens mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos met with the president of IOC Juan Antonio Samaranch.

[04] Proximity talks on Cyprus will be held

The third round of proximity talks on Cyprus will take place normally, as the Cypriot president Glafkos Kliridis notified the UN secretary general Koffi Anan that he will be able to go to New York on May 23rd for the scheduled talks.

[05] ND party sets up organizing committee

The organizing committee for the New Democracy party's extraordinary congress which will finally take place on June 9th, 10th and 11th at the Peace and Friendship Stadium, was set up by decision of the party's leader Kostas Karamanlis. Mr Karamanlis is on a visit to Italy since yesterday for contacts and talks in the framework of the European Popular Party's meeting.

Meanwhile, the honorary president of the New Democracy party Konstantinos Mitsotakis stated that the present ruling party, governs democratically. Mr Mitsotakis said that the New Democracy party did not win in the elections of April 9th, as it initially believed, but added that Pasok and The New Democracy were two parties with about the same power.
