[01] THE GENERAL SHARE PRICE INDEX RECOVERED SIGNIFICANTLY
There was an impressive change at the Athens Stock Exchange yesterday
following the heavy losses of the past days. The general share price
index recovered significantly rising by 5.83 percent and closing at
5.591,28 points. There was an increased interest in medium and big
enterprises as well as in bank shares. The measures announced by the
Bank of Greece to boost investors' interest appeared to have played a
major role in the recovery. Meanwhile the National Economy ministry has
tabled a bill in Parliament to give legislative status to measures
announced by the Board of the Stock Exchange for the transparency and
the protection of investors. The National Economy minister Yannos
Papantoniou, who is in Washington for the International Monetary Fund
session, said that the Greek bourse had a much higher performance than
the other european stock exchanges.
[02] SIMITIS MET THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE FOR THE OLYMPICS 2004
Prime minister Costas Simitis yesterday met the heads of the Organising
Committee for the 2004 Olympics. He also had a meeting with the German
ambassador in Athens in view of a visit to Athens by the German
chancellor Gerhard Schreoder next Monday. Mr shcreoder has been invited
by the Greek-German chamber which celebrates its 75th anniversary.
[03] SEISMOLOGISTS SAID THE POST-QUAKE ACTIVITY IS NORMAL
Seismologists have reassured that the post-quake activity is normal,
stressing that there is no any method of predicting tremors. Meanwhile,
the European Social Fund will grant 16 billion drs to help with the
Greek government's relief measures for the earthquake hit people, the
Labour undersecretary Christos Protopapas has said. He also said that
the government has decided to grant subsidies to the municipalities to
hire 1,200 employees in the earthquake-hit districts. The Environment
ministry has said that at least 4,000 prefabricated houses will be
ready by November the 15th to house people now living in tents.
[04] BILL CLINTON MET BULENT ECEVIT YESTERDAY
The Turkish prime minister Bulent Ecevit yesterday met with the
American president Bill Clinton. They discussed issues such as the
Greek-turkish relations, the Cyprus dispute as well as Turkey's request
for a considerable increase in American economic aid to Ankara.
Commenting on statements by the Turkish prime minister about a package
solution on the Aegean and Cyprus, the Greek government spokesman
Dimitris Reppas has said that the Cyprus problem is an internaitonal
problem and should not be linked to Greek-turkish relations. Mr Reppas
said that Greece and Turkey could easily handle their problems if both
countries took advantage of the international law. He added that as
regards the Aegean, Turkey has been advised to have recourse at the
International Court at the Hague. Mr Reppas also said that statements
by Turkush officials indicated that Ankara still adhered to stands
which did not allow any optimism for a Cyprus settlement. He added
that as an international issue, the Cyprus question was being dealt
with within the United Nations context.
PASOK'S EXECUTIVE BUREAU CONVENED YESTERDAY
PASOK's Executive Bureau met yesterday under the chairmanship of the
prime minister Costas Simitis to discuss current political developments
and take decisions about the PASOK's election strategy. After the
meeting, the secretary general of the PASOK's Central Committee, Kostas
Skandalidis, denied rumours about early elections in November and
underlined that the political climate was now favourable for the
government.
[05] GREEK TRANSPORT MINISTER MET HIS UKRANIAN COUNTERPART
Transport minsiter Anastasios Mantelis had a meeting with his Ukranian
counterpart Ivan Dangevich in Athens yesterday. The two sides agreed to
set up a coordinating committee for the development of the road and
railway axis which will link Alexandroupolis with Odessus, Kiev and
Helsinki. Greece has also agreed to give the Ukranian airline AEROSUITÅ licence for flights to Greece if flight safety checks which will be carried out next month prove satisfactory.
[06] ARCHBISHOP CHRISTODOULOS MET ARCHBISHOP OF FINLAND
Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and all Grece yesterday met with the
archbishop of Finland Ioannis who is on an official visit to Greece.
[07] KYPRIANOU WILL VISIT ISRAEL ON NOVEMBER 21-24
The president of the Cypriot Parliament Spyros Kyprianou will pay an
official visit in Isreal on November 21-24, following an invitation by
his Israeli counterpart Avraham Berg.
