[02] PM upbeat on Pasok's future performance in EuroelectionsIn an interview with the Greek Sunday newspaper "To Ethnos tis Kyriakis", Prime Minister Costas Simitis expressed optimism about the course charted by the government and the PASOK party.He said he was certain that the Greek people would renew their confidence in the ruling party in the forthcoming Euroelections in June. The prime minister also called on all those who, he claimed, were cultivating a climate of defeatism and petty interest-seeking, to shoulder their responsibilities. [03] US urged to take more initiative in Cyprus issueOpposition New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis, who is on a 10-day official visit to the United States, is currently in Boston where he visited the Greek-Orthodox Theological Seminary yesterday.Mr Karamanlis attended the service at the church of the Holy Cross and in a short address at the "Maltioto" cultural centre, explained that the reason for his official visit to the US was to exert pressure on the American government to be more decisive in relation to issues in our region, such as Turkey's threats and its intransigent stance regarding the Cyprus issue. Mr Karamanlis said that in relation to our national issues, we need to adopt a united front, adding that we cannot build tomorrow on the divisions of yesterday. Referring to the ethic Greek community abroad, he said that better coordination was needed within the broader Greek-American community, so that it may better contribute to the common cause. In the meantime, the president of the Pancypriot Organisation, Philip Christopher, in an interview yesterday with the 5th program of Greek State Radio, pointed out the need to increase pressure on American president Bill Clinton to facilitate the normalisation of Greek-Turkish relations, following the arrest of PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, and to commit himself to undertaking an initiative for the resolution of the Cyprus dispute, during the upcoming congress of the International Coordinating Committee for the Cypriot Struggle. According to a report in yesterday's "To Vima" newspaper, the United States intends to undertake an initiative to address the problem of war-divided Cyprus along the lines of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. This was announced to senior Greek foreign ministry officials by the US State Department's coordinator for cyprus, Thomas Miller, who visited Athens last week. The driving force behind the initiative will be presidential envoy Richard Hollbrooke, who will retain the Cyprus brief, after assuming his new duties as US permanent representative to the United Nations. Britain is also expected to participate in the effort. [04] Controversial missiles to be deployed as plannedIn an interview with Cyprus state radio, Greek National Defence Undersecretary Dimitris Apostolakis said that the general staff of Greece and of Cyprus were jointly working on the installation of the Russian-made S-300 anti-aircraft missiles on the island of Crete by the end of March, as planned.[05] Coalition of the Left leader slams government policiesThe leader of the Coalition of the Left, Nikos Konstantopoulos, yesterday harshly criticised the government concerning its overall policies.He made the comments while addressing a rally in the town of Kilkis, northern Greece, where the party has begun its pre-election campaign. [06] No evidence that "Liberios" rammedInvestigations into the circumstances of the shipwreck of the fishing vessel "Liberios" are taking a new turn. From the evidence available so far, experts have not discovered any damage to the ship's hull to indicate that it was rammed, as originally surmised.[07] Rescue operation underway at Mount OlympusA team of rescue workers is attempting to approach a deep chasm on Mount Olympus, where 3 mountain climbers have fallen. At this point, it is still unknown whether they are dead or alive, as it is estimated that they fell from a height of 600 metres.The three men belonged to an eight-member group, which set out on the weekend to climb the historical mountain--known as the "home of the Gods" in ancient Greek mythology.
