Greece and Cyprus are prepared for any possibility, stated Cypriot Foreign Minister Yannakis Kassoulidis, but expressed the conviction that Ankara would not provoke a hostile incident. [02] Athens public prosecutor files charges against "Ta Nea"The Athens Public Prosecutor's office filed criminal charges against any found responsible among the staff of the daily Greek newspaper, "Ta Nea," for violating state secrets through the press, for being an accessory prior to the fact, and for violating legislative provisions relating to the press.The charges concern the publication of the Kostoulas report in "Ta Nea" and subsequently, according to the prosecutor, the violation of ambassador Giorgos Kotsoulas' top secret report containing information on the Greek government's handling of the Ocalan affair--information which the state's interests requires to be kept from foreign governments. The opposition New Democracy party also plans to file similar charges against the newspaper. [03] Pasok preparing for crucial congressThe ruling Pasok party is entering the final phase for its crucial congress scheduled to take place later this month. National Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos stated that he would not be seeking the position of party leader, and clarified that the government would not be judged in the June Euroelections.Meanwhile, Environment Minister Costas Laliotis said all members could offer their support to Prime Minister Costas Simitis, as he planned to do. Mr. Laliotis added that the congress proceedings would determine Pasok's fate in the national elections next year. [04] ND leader in USA for high-level meetingsOpposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis has been visiting the United States since Saturday. During his 10-day stay, Mr. Karamanlis will have a series of meeting with high-ranking American officials, as well as with the United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, and representatives of the Greek community in the US. The main subject of discussions will be Greek-Turkish relations and the latest developments in the Balkans. Tomorrow, Tuesday, the ND leader will meet with the US Secretary of State, Madleine Allbright, while on Thursday, he will be received by Vice- President Al Gore.[05] Denktash bans women from leaving occupied Cypriot territoryTurkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has imposed a ban on the presence of women from the Turkish-occupied territories at United Nations bi-communal events, marking International Women's Day today.The UN secretary-general's special envoy, Ann Hercus has expressed her regret at Mr. Denktash's decision. [06] Coalition of the Left leader slams Pasok governmentCoalition of the Left leader Nikos Constantopoulos yesterday launched into a verbal attack on the government at his concluding speech, marking the end of the Coalition congress held in Athens.Mr. Constantopoulos claimed that, after three years of rule by Pasok, the Simitis government is up for judgement for his political choices. He also reiterated his position that national elections should be conducted together with the upcoming Euroelections this year. [07] Greek athlete wins gold in JapanKaterina Thanou yesterday won a gold medal in the 60-metre dash, at the World Track and Field Championships, held in Japan.The Greek athlete clocked up a time of 6.96 seconds, which is a record worldwide for this year and the fourth best of all time.
