  • [01] Kotzias to travel to New York for meeting with UN's Guterres on Friday

Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias will be in New York on Thursday in order to meet on Friday the newly-elected Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, ahead of the top-level meeting on Cyprus in Geneva on January 12.

During his visit, Kotzias will also meet with the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Peter Thomson, the Chief Executive Officer of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), David Harris, the National Director Emeritus of the Anti-Defamation League, Abraham Foxman, and the United Nations Special Representative on FYROM's name issue, Matthew Nimetz.

[02] Athens International Airport achieves record passenger traffic in 2016

Athens International Airport recorded its highest passenger traffic in its history in 2016, reaching 20.02 million passengers, the company said on Wednesday. Compared with 2015, passenger traffic increased by 1.9 million passengers, or 10.7 percent last year.

Domestic as well as international traffic registered double-digit increases in 2016, by 11.2 percent and 10.4 percent respectively, which translates to 7.15 million and 12.87 million passengers. The rise in traffic was boosted by a 15 percent rise in Greek tourists as well as an 8 percent rise in foreign travellers.

In December, airport traffic recorded 1.35 million passengers, surpassing by 14.3 percent the same month of 2015.

The total number of flights last year reached 189,000, up by 7.4 percent compared to the same period of 2015, registering an increase in domestic (6.4 pct) and international flights (8.1 pct), the airport said.

[03] Center for disease control urges people to get flu shot

The center for disease control and prevention (KEELPNO) urged vulnerable groups on Wednesday to be vaccinated against the flu, adding health services are ready for the flu season.

"It is never too late for the vaccine. Even now, the high-risk groups must be vaccinated," the center said in a press release, noting however that the outbreaks have so far been low in Greece.

"The most likely scenario is that the subtype A (򺓆) will prevail," epidemiologist Takis Panagiotopoulos, who works with KEELPNO, told Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA). "The virus tends to affect mainly older people, a group that should be vaccinated, as well as the chronically ill and health professionals, regardless of age."

Authorities have so far recorded one death from a confirmed case of influenza A and 10 serious cases of confirmed influenza, with hospitalization of the patients in intensive care units. The patient who died belonged to the high-risk groups.

The peak of the flu season is expected in February and March, the center said.

[04] Thanasis Bakalexis appointed governor of new national insurance body EFKA

The government appointed on Wednesday the governor and two deputy governors of the new national insurance body, EFKA, which was created with the merging of nine social security funds.

Deputy Minister for Social Insurance Issues, Tassos Petropoulos, appointed Thanasis Bakalexis EFKA governor and Dimitris Tsakiris and Lambros Sembos as deputy governors.
