  • [01] Cyprus President Anastasiades in Athens on Friday

    Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades will be in Athens on Friday to meet with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in the presence of the two countries foreign ministers, announced on Tuesday Cyprus government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides.

    Christodoulides said that this week is expected to take place the first meeting, at technocrats' level, of the Greek and Turkish Foreign Ministries where, among others, they will discuss the Cyprus issue.

    [02] Those who invested in second review's failure will be disappointed, says Dep.FM Amanatidis

    Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Amanatidis said that those who invested in the failure of the completion of the second review will be disappointed, speaking to Athens Macedonian News Agency "Praktoreio 104.9FM" on Tuesday.

    The review will conclude and 2017 will be the year that the country will have growth.

    Referring to main opposition New Democracy's request for early elections, Amanatidis said that Kyriakos Mitsotakis calls for elections from the day he was elected ND leader and noted that his insistence is indicative of "ND's strategic impasse".

    On Cyprus issue, Amanatidis referred to efforts with aim positive developments and called the current moment very fragile noting that "all the forces are working in order to have a positive development".

    [03] ND sternly attacks PM Tsipras over letter to institutions

    Main opposition New Democracy (ND) on Tuesday sternly attacked Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras characterising him "the best ally of Europe's extremists that want Greece trapped in endless austerity".

    In an announcement the main opposition accused the government that it refused to make public Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos "letter of repentance" to the institutions.

    "The citizens know the truth. Mr. Tsipras would do everything to stay in power. He will not hesitate to sign whatever asked to delay the confrontation with people's verdict. He has become the best ally of some extremists in Europe that want Greece trapped in endless austerity. Everything else is a cheap show for domestic consumption" said ND and called on the government to reveal Tsakalotos' letter.

    [04] EU Commissioner Moscovici welcomes decision for restart of negotiations on relief of Greek debt

    European Commissioner Pierre Moscovici for Economic and Financial Affairs welcomed Eurogroup chief Jeroen Dijsselbloem's announcement on the restart of the negotiations for the relief of the Greek debt "The way is open for the relief measures of the Greek debt. A necessary and fair agreement is becoming apparent and I welcome it" posted on his twitter account.

    [05] Turkish-flagged freighter runs aground off Kos

    The Turkish-flagged freighter ALCATRAS on Tuesday run aground in shallow waters 100m off the coasts of Kos island. According to the freighter's captain the ship has sailed from Tuzla port, Turkey for Antalya carrying technical equipment. The five members of the crew are safe. The captain said that the reason of the accident was failure of the steering gear. No oil slick has been detected.

    [06] TAS acquires Eurobank's Ukrainian subsidiary Universal Bank

    TAS Group and Eurobank announced on Tuesday that the acquisition of Eurobank's Ukrainian subsidiary, Universal Bank ("Universal") by TAS Group, was concluded on 23 December 2016, after all required regulatory approvals have been obtained.

    According to an announcement, this transaction is in line with the long term development strategy of financial sector of TAS GROUP and will have a positive impact on strengthening its position in the Ukrainian financial market. The transaction is in line with the strategic plan of Eurobank and its focus on specific markets whereas Eurobank has already significant presence. It is also consistent with the Group's restructuring plan as agreed with the European Commission and implemented accordingly. The transaction is capital neutral on a Group level. Stavros Ioannou, Deputy CEO of Eurobank Group commented: "We believe that this transaction is in the best interest of the Ukrainian clients of Eurobank Group and the employees of Universal whose interests will be duly cared by a strong Ukrainian bank, the shareholder of which has a significant track record in the local financial market and will allow Eurobank Group to concentrate on its key markets, as required by its restructuring plan, which is approved by the European Commission".
