  • [01] The refugee issue demonstrated EU's political gap, President Pavlopoulos says

The refugee issue demonstrated the huge political gap for the resolution of critical problems in the European Union as well as the exceptionally dangerous institutional and democratic gap that undermines the foundations of the European structure on its course towards its completion, President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Monday said addressing the conference "Progressive solutions and proposals for the refugee."

Pavlopoulos stressed that the refugee issue and the financial crisis are the two major issues that test the coherence and the perspective of the European Union and the European Structure.

He also said that the European Union delayed in dealing with such an important problem for its coherence and perspective and for the European Democracy and European Culture.

"Unfortunately, among other problems, the refugee issue demonstrated the weakness of the member to successfully assimilated the European institutional and cultural acquis, manifesting unusual phobias and facing Europe more as their own area protection than as an area of coexistence through mutual respect to their rights and obligations," he added.

[02] Greek central gov't cash balance in deficit of 1.423 bln euros in Jan-Nov

In January-November 2016, the central government cash balance recorded a deficit of €1,423 million, compared to a deficit of €1,902 million in the same period in 2015, according to the Bank of Greece.

During this period, ordinary budget revenue amounted to €43,585 million, compared to €39,934 million in the corresponding period of last year.

Revenue of €43 million regarding Securities Markets Programme (SMP) income transfers from the Bank of Greece is excluded.

Ordinary budget expenditure, including expenditure of about €3,380 million for the repayment of arrears, amounted to €44,826 million, from €42,230 million in January-November 2015.

[03] Deliberations between institutions and Greece continue

BRUSSELS (ANA/ Ch.Vassilaki) - The deliberations between the institutions and the Greek authorities continue with the view to have the second programme review concluded by the Eurogroup meeting on January 26, an EU official said on Monday.

In Brussels, they believe that the issue regarding the short-term measures should not affect the programme review.

The same official said that the positions of both sides seem to converge and the open issues can be soon closed provided that there is volition.

Meanwhile, a EuroWorking Group will be held on Tuesday via teleconference at 16.00. The representatives of the eurozone finance ministries will discuss the issue of giving the green light to short-term measures on debt after the institutions' resolution on Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' announcements.

According to EU sources, there are many different opinions, as some ministers are disappointed by the fact the Eurogroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem proceeded to the announcement of freezing the implementation of measures, without consulting them.
