  • [01] US President Obama in Athens on Tuesday

US President Barack Obama will depart from Washington on Monday for his last trip to Europe as President. On Tuesday Obama will visit Greece and afterwards he will visit Germany.

Outgoing President Obama, who sternly condemned and warned over Donald Trump's possible election during the US campaign, must assume the responsibility - in the name of a smooth transition - to calm down the Europeans that are deeply concerned over the future of the democracy in USA.

[02] US President Obama visit to Greece a message of support, says Alt FM Katrougalos

US president Barack Obama's visit to Greece is a "confirmation of Greece's strategic importance for the US" as well as "a symbolic action" that sends a "a message of support to Greece to the open political problems such as the debt issue," Alternate Foreign Minister responsible for European Affairs George Katrougalos said on Monday speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency's radio "Praktorio 104.9".

Referring to Donald Trump's election, he said it "marks the inevitable change to the status quo" and explained "the middle class is suffocating and reacts differently from country to country."

[03] FM Kotzias stresses need to respect US election result

Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias stressed the need for respect to the US election result in the extraordinary meeting of the 28 EU foreign ministers late on Sunday in Brussels. The ministers referred to the changes that the election of the new President can bring in Euro-Atlantic relations and issues concerning Europe such as the implementation of Iran and climate change agreements. Kotzias underlined that respect should be shown regardless of the election result stressing the importance of making Europe's decision understood and continue the US-EU cooperation. "It must be made understood, the Greek Foreign Minister said, "that the election of Donald Trump was not a coincidence, but a result of major structural problems the US faced and that Europe will or is already facing."

[04] ND leader Mitsotakis estimates Trump will be different as President

New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday in an interview with iefimerida estimated that Donald Trump will be different after his election.

Mitsotakis considered that there would be no problems as the US has important institutions. As he said, the US system provides for the necessary controls in the executive power to avoid policies against the country's interests.

As he said, the society is divided. "We are facing a great challenge as for how wealth is produced and distributed. Globalisation has not benefited everyone on equal terms."

"Our aim is not to attribute responsibilities or to punish anyone. Our aim is to see the reality. In order to close the chapter of the new regime, we must keep the positive experiences, learn from our mistakes and go ahead," he underlined.
